It isn't news that what the NFL fines players for and the amount of money it fines players for certain transgressions are sometimes a little wonky - and today is one of those cases. Wes Welker was fined $10,000 by the league for wearing an "unauthorized hat during his postgame interview," according to a league spokesman. Welker tweeted about the fine and wasn't too happy about it, writing, "Got fined by the NFL for wearing a @Bonk_Breaker hat in an interview after the game. Thanks for warning me the other 16 weeks I wore the hat". Going back through video clips of Welker's postgame interviews this season, he is wearing the same hat in each. In case you're wondering, Bonk Breaker is a gluten free, dairy free energy bar - Welker says in a later tweet that he is an investor in the company, which is why he wears the hat. What an absolute freaking joke. $15k for a cheap hit on a reciver and $10k for wearing the wrong hat? Yea that makes sense. And yea where the heck were they the rest of the season? This is the stupidest thing I've heard in a while.
'course hate to see the NFL Fine Machine in high gear but if I step back...yea, tough to do...I think Welker is sounding like a prima donna. So, as an investor in a company, he wears a cap advertising his product for 16 weeks (as he admits), gets fined 10 K in the 17th & whines his butt off thru Twitter of how unfair it is...when is it our turn to stick a boot up his ass? Or.... Are we supposed to feel sorry for him getting free advertising/getting busted finally with a paltry fine while he whines that it's the NFL's job to tell him he's ripping off the NFL for free marketing? The 10 K is probably a lot less for the exposure he gained thru the season & should shut his big mouth. F off, Wes...we already know how to righteously hate on Goodell/NFL for their crap but don't try to jump on our bandwagon like you're a victim here. Players who want to use the NFL cameras/media should take the hit & STFU... On a side note: Wonder who the only intelligent person is in his camp that pushed him in a later tweet to admit he's an investor is. Sure doesn't sound like it was Wes...
Dude that's goobered. It's not even about any of that. It's stupid because it took themn 17 weeks to catch on and fine him. And you get $15k for putting a player in danger with an illegal hit, but he gets $5k less for wearing the wrong hat? That's why it's stupid. He shouldn't have worn the hat. Urlacher did the same thing a few years ago for vitamin water and he got fined. But not 17 weeks late.
Just this story alone has advertised his product more than any other $10000 would do. Who on here has ever heard of that energy bar before this story? Lol... Good investment Wes.
Roger needs to run for president. Our debt problem would be solved in no time the way this tool fines people. smh
yes, the league protects its' uniform consistency and approved advertising partners diligently. i really can't blame them. they're just protecting their brand/money. however, i'm not sure why they let it go on for 4 months without warning and then finally did something......... that's pretty weird.
They probably flat out didn't notice...lol. How could the red hat that Favre would wear be approved. Wasn't that a NIKE hat? I don't remember ever hearing he was fined and he wore that thing ever week...
i think if the league has any sort of advertising arrangement with a company then the player is allowed to wear their clothing. Maybe at that time, NIKE and the NFL had a business relationship.
It was Reebok from 2002 to 2011...I believe. Favre wore that Nike hat a lot in that period...and I would think that would be a MAJOR violation...
