It took a natural disaster for the New Orleans Saints to be desperate enough to sign Drew Brees in 2006. Six glorious years later, the team is privately trying to sell itself on the notion that Brees is simply a “very good†quarterback. That was the word coming out of the NFL scouting combine this past week, when Saints general manager Mickey Loomis tried to define Brees as “very good†when the quarterback was called “great,†according to three league sources. All three sources were asking Loomis why it was taking so long to sign Brees to a contract extension and his answer spoke volumes. It also spoke to the fact that Saints owner Tom Benson is likely going to have to step in to solve the situation but to this point, he has left the matter to Loomis. As one league insider said: “Benson knows where this team was 15 years ago and he sees where it is now. He has to make the call. Mickey is not going to do it.†Source: Yahoo! Sports
i call bullcrap on this BTW.....if it's true that Loomis wants to give him $19m/year and Manning and Brady got $18m deals, how on earth does Loomis's offer imply that he thinks that Drew is merely "very good" and not "great"?
well, another report says bress is asking for $5 mill more a year than loomis is offering so if loomis is in fact offering 19 mill then brees is asking 24 mill and obviously that's handcuffing a team.
Dude Brees really isnt THAT good....he only through for 2052340567340937845683490 yards and 4984 tds in the last 4 games in 2011....
For a second I thought you were being serious and I was about to rage. Well played. Apparently Brees wants 23 mil which is actually what Peyton gets in the last couple years of his deal. Saints only want to give him 18 mil.
eh, peyton was never going to see the end of that contract. even if healthy, he would have had to renegotiate it. here's my problem with this situation. yes, brees is good and may be worthy of $23 mill a year. However, is he just now to the point in his life where he's trying to make as much bank as he can these last few years and doesn't really care about winning another SB ? The saints are already in cap hell and he is proposing that he should have a $13 mill/year pay raise. If he gets his demands, there are only 2 things the Saints can do ............... release some players or make other players restructure ........... so, Brees is basically sending some of his teammates to the unemployment line or, at the very least, asking them to take a pay cut so that he can make $23 mill year and eat up almost 20% of their entire team cap. I understand the guy is probably worth $23 mill but there are some other issues with this whole thing that should raise some red flags.
