The Detroit Tigers and slugger Prince Fielder have agreed to a nine-year, $214 million deal, a source told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.CBSSports.com and Yahoo! each had earlier reported the deal between the Tigers and the free-agent first baseman.Even though he never expected to re-sign Fielder, Milwaukee Brewers general manager Doug Melvin called his departure "somewhat of a sad day," in comments to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.Melvin said the Brewers never made Fielder an offer once the team found out the terms that agent Scott Boras was seeking."Scott said from Day 1 it was going to be $200 million," Melvin told the newspapper. "When you hear those kinds of numbers, we couldn't get involved in that. All I can say is we had the feeling it was going to be very difficult to keep him." Source: ESPN
the tigers are one of the few MLB teams that doesn't turn a profit ............ apparently it's not bothering the owner that the team is losing money since he's still spending money like it's water.
Illich is like 85 years old and has tons of money, so he probably figured what the hell? Let's buy our way to a WS. They are now one of the favorites for sure....
So Cabrera is moving the 3rd where he committed 5 errors in 14 games last year? Seems to be a weak point there. And what are they going to do when Victor Martinez comes back in 2013? They can't DH 3 guys.
I don't know about paying that much money. Ask the Texas Rangers how that worked with A-Roid. Also, ask the Yankees how that's working with A-Roid AND Teixeira. I read today that they are guaranteed a combined $47 million a year through 2016. Even then, A-Roid will still have one more $24 million season left, at age 42.
Ask the Yankees how the A-Rod an Teixeira contracts went? They won a World Series didn't they? I think that's going alright.
yeah and arod deal with the rangers isnt a good counter either considering they didnt have rod around him.
You're right. They won a WS in 2009. But here are some things to think about. A-Rod's post-season in 2009 was a mirage. He's hitting .277 in the post-season overall. Teixeira's BA in seven playoff series: .207. A-Rod and Tex are guaranteed a combined $47 million a year through 2016. And even then, A-Rod will still have one more $24 million season left, at 42. When the Yankees were so dominant in the 90s, it was the pitching that did it, not the hitting. They had a staff that included Pettitte, Clemens, and Cone on the front end and Wetteland and Rivera on the back end. The Yankees have forgotten what made them great and have listened too much to Scott Boras, IMO.
well, so far the 3-4 punch of cabrera and fielder looks to be one of the strongest, if not THE strongest, in baseball. throw in their pitching staff and I don't see how the Tigers shouldn't be expected to win the AL pennant this season.
yep, they have teed off against both the rays AND the red sox, who both have at least decent pitching staffs. and with so many games against the weak AL central teams, if they stay healthy, i could see this team with 110-115 wins. the season will be considered a failure, though, if they don't win the pennant ............ lots of pressure.
