Who's The Better Draft Guru: Mel Kiper Or Mike Mayock

from what i've heard, rick isn't doing mock drafts anymore and is dedicating less time to the nfl draft.

 

That's correct. The DMN kicked him upstairs, so he's not covering just the NFL, but all sports. When he did cover the NFL draft, I thought he was as good, if not better, than anyone.

Im not particularly fond of any of them. Their job is to get people to watch them talk, and the best way to get someone to watch is to have differing opinions from the other people in the field and create "controversy". I feel like a lot of times they go out of their way to create a differing opinion whether its based in reality or not just so they get the views and the commercial revenue. None of their predictions are worth half a crap anyway, none of them are anywhere close to 100% on player analysis or draft predictions, so they can get away with throwing wild crap out there to stir up the viewers because nobody really expects them to be right anyway. Happen to get something right, then they're a genius, but get something wrong and nobody really blinks. It's a no-lose situation.

 

yep, these guys aren't any better than actual nfl scouts at projecting players. go back and look at some of mayocks 'acclaimed' position ranking charts from 3 or 4 years ago. They will make you laugh. He whiffs just as much as the actual NFL teams.

and kiper's predictions of which teams will choose which players are typically one of the more accurate mock drafts out there, but he still only gets about 1/4 of the players matched up to the right team. you would think he would have better sources and be able to nail more than 1/4.

 

I much prefer Mayock to Kiper. I feel he's great at breaking down and analysing the prospects, although some of this rankings do leave a lot to be desired at times.

However, it's safe to say both could eat McShay and puke out both a better and more likeable analyst.

 

Actual NFL Scouts are much better than any of these "draft gurus.". A lot of times these draft gurus are going off what an NFL Scout, NFL GM, NFL "Front Office Person" tells them...

 

I remember a couple years ago sports illustrated did a mock draft where they got 0 picks right in the first round. Zero.

Draft analysis is like predicting the weather, you don't really have to know what you're doing, you just have to look like you do.

 

It would be interesting to see where Mayock and Kiper landed with their mock drafts in the GIF contest...

 

well, i would HOPE kiper is doing that when he's giving us his mock drafts because we don't want to see HIS opinion about who a team should take, we want to see who which team is most likely to take. Rick Gosselin never watched very much film at all when he was providing the most accurate mocks for the last 5 years. His mock was purely based on talking to all 32 teams.

but as far as mayock, it's my understanding that his 'position rankings' are based upon talking to people in addition to his own film study.

and i wouldn't give actual nfl scouts too much credit. all of them will tell you that the draft is mostly a roll of the dice and there is no pure science to it. half of the first rounders selected tomorrow night will flop in this league and no one really knows for sure which half is going to flop and which are going to turn into stars.

Kiper and his obsession with QBs being over 6'2 is just another reason he's an idiot.

 

I love me some Mayock. He breaks it down real well so that you can really see why a team would pick someone in every situation.

 

So what was the final tally on the "expert" mocks?

 

I think Kiper was a half point better than Mayock and both were towards the bottom of the GIF contest...

 

There jobs are going to be infinitely harder now with the amount of draft trades that will be happening during the rookie wage scale era.

 

No, it's going to be infinitely easier. Now they can say whatever they please about anything, knowing its all going to get hecked off by trades so who cares?
