Baltimore Ravens linebacker and the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year Terrell Suggs has suffered a torn Achilles' tendon and is expected to miss the 2012 season, Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network reports. The injury occurred while Suggs was working out in his native Arizona. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Suggs was playing basketball at the time of the injury. Suggs had 70 tackles, a career-high 14 sacks, two interceptions and seven forced fumbles for the Ravens last season. Even though the Ravens used a second round pick on Alabama linebacker Courtney Upshaw in 2012, losing Suggs, who played in 95 percent of the team's defensive snaps last season, is a devastating blow to a Ravens defense that posted 48 sacks and ranked in the Top 5 against the run and pass last season. While Suggs will likely miss the season, the Ravens are likely to place him on the "Reserve/Non-Football Injury" list at the start of training camp, Suggs is due $4.9 million in base salary this season, but players on that list are not entitled to any compensation, though teams occasionally negotiate lower salary rates while a player is on the NFI list.

to sum up the ravens offseason:

1) Re-hire Cam Cameron as OC, despite well-known offensive deficiencies and his predictable offense
2) Franchise Ray Rice, pissing off their only legitimate offensive talent
3) Allow young, Pro Bowl Guard Ben Grubbs to leave in FA, only to use that money to resign 36 year old Matt Birk and 35 year old Bryant McKinnie
4) Have their young, supposedly franchise QB delude himself into thinking he deserves Top 5 QB money, despite him being around the Top 12 QBs in terms of talent and production
5) Have Ed Reed, one of the best defensive backs of his generation come out and say that we are disrespecting him by not addressing his contract
5) Have an intermediate draft with a focus on long term potential rather then immediate production, despite most of their key producers being geared for an immediate Super Bowl run
6) Have their best defensive player and NFL DPOTY tear his Achilles during a conditioning test
7) in addition to losing grubbs and suggs they lost jarrett johnson, zbikowski, nakamura, lee evans, ricky williams, cory redding...ouch

yikes. don't a lot of these players have stipulations in their contracts that if they get hurt playing recreational sports, they lose their salary?

yeah i imagine if they were to not pay suggs he would certainly never play another down for them again....thats a road i dont think they want to go down.

is there a new IR rule or am i making that up?

they COULD go after osi

I've been hearing that something like that varies from team-to-team but something like basketball isn't usually in the contract as a stipulation. As a matter of fact, a lot of the conditioning coaches will recommend something like basketball or tennis to help keep their conditioning up...

Damn. Arguably a bigger hit than the Eagles took with the Peters injury.

Brutal.

Arguably? There's no argument about it, this is by far a bigger blow. Ravens are starring down crap creek with this loss when factoring the other roster chances as mentioned by K Train.

well i was told "to do some research, seriously" as to why i think they are an 8-8 squad and not a top 5 D/superbowl contender

but hey at least they are as deep at corner as they have ever been right?

You clearly didn't watch Jason Peters last year if you think it isn't arguable.

On top of the horrible news i had my power cut off for 3 hrs because they got the wrong apartment..sorry for the late response but lets address this.....

The Ravens have exactly 9 players left from the 2008 AFC runner up, in case you didnt notice Ozzie has done a masterful job in the draft acquire rotation players and depth on top of budget free agent signings.

Most all those players you named were backups/role players...Kruger was in line to replace JJ...Mcphee and Jones to replace Redding as a run stuffer...Bernard Pierce replacing Ricky Williams...Zibby and Nakamura where to backups replaced by Considine and our draft pick christian thompson. Osemele or Jah Reid to replace Ben Grubbs whose been overrated by the outside fan and wasnt even the best guard on this team, we made a fair offer to Grubbs and NO made a better one, Birk was signed for a fraction of that and Mckinnie just had a roster bonus picked up for 50 thou. He is a good player and the one free agent loss where it's possible that the replacement will be a downgrade short term.

Ed Reed has never been clear about his future until he now hit a contract year...We paid Ray Lewis a unprecedented amount of money for a LB his age and we'll do the same for Ed if he wants to play, it really is a non issue.

Ray rice has been offered an extension on par with Arian Foster's recent extension...if his agents decides he wants much more then that then Rice will play under the tag this yr, possibly next and then he'll play for another team. I have a feeling they'll back down their demands and itll get done, if not oh well.

In the AFCC when it counted Cam was less predictable and Joe was really good, good enough to throw the winning TD. Cam calls games like that one on top of having Jim Caldwell on board to be a sounding board, keep Joe's fundamentals consistent, etc.

I applaud ur research somewhat but it came from a shortsided view...i will say this, my view is optimistic, not VERY lol, but optimistic, yours is the opposite. I think its fair to say its somewhere in the middle.

The beautiful thing about all this is coming back to a division we swept you'll see first hand who's right at least two times this year. I think Oz and co's hard work will come to the forefront even more this year.

That was cute, and very ironic :icon_cheesygrin: Demaryius Thomas ftw

right they swept the steelers, i get that i will acknowledge that....but i cant possibly see that happening again. im not really a homer by regular standards in that i hate the steelers just as often and as much as i love them but the sweep of last year was a result of a complete abortion of a defensive effort from lebeau, but hey that once play was the difference between WC weekdend and a first round bye.

grubbs is a big blow (i like osemele, but time will tell and i know yanda is the better of the two...but stud guardS goes a long way), suggs is a big blow....i dont shy away from my hatred for suggs and the ravens in general but i dont think im too short sighted. These are a accumulation of things ive enjoyed seeing over the last few months.

the general consensus among ravens fans regarding suggs injuries is "in ozzie we trust" and thats all well and good im just more along the lines of i think that kind of mentality might be running out.

My question is why you'd say running out? We have literally a handful of old players on our entire team and one of the best drafting teams in football...at least your smarter then the commentators that continually say the D is getting long in the tooth when the defense gets younger every year and remains a top D. Not trying to discredit the loss of Suggs what i will say is we are 8 and 2 in games Ray and Ed have missed over the past few season. Suggs imo was the table setter and the defense's best player but i dont think this team is gonna somehow fall off a cliff and not be one of the better teams in the AFC. I just dont see it.

Crowned Doesn't give a shit.

We will probably still see Suggs twice this year if his prediction is correct, go on PUP and be back by November at the latest. I just don't think he will have that same explosion coming back from the injury. Going to take a while to get that back.

he plays a position that relies on acceleration, bending around an edge, and speed...and hes 30. im saying hes got a serious uphill battler suiting up by november

peyton manning promised he would play last year too

Which makes that statement resonate even louder lol...Hopefully you saw the numbers i posted, quietly the Ravens will enter the season with imo one of the best group of cornerbacks in the league....really look at what Ladarius Webb last year and to a lesser extent what Cary Williams did.

19. Crowned

Crowned Doesn't give a shit.

The Ravens don't enter anything quietly. They will be running their mouths as usual, but they don't have much hardware to show for it.

? What is there to enter? I cant fathom how a Steeler fan is complaing about anybodies mouth...i really dont get ur point here? enlighten me...
