The USFL is making a comeback, but unlike last time, it's not going to serve as a direct competitor to the NFL. This time, those in charge of running it want to make it more of a developmental league that will begin next March. “We will not try to compete with the NFL at all,†CEO Jaime Cuadra told the AP. “We will play in markets where there are no NFL teams or major league baseball teams. It's a league for guys who are on the bubble for making NFL teams, and we will have complete open access for the NFL. We want to build a model that is sustainable.†Each team would play a 14-game schedule, and after the season, USFL players could join an NFL team at training camp. Though there would be virtually no rest in between seasons for players who were good enough to earn a spot at an NFL training camp, it would make a good opportunity for those who want to continue living the dream of playing pro football. According to the AP, the cities that are being considered for USFL franchises are: Portland, Ore.; Salt Lake City; San Antonio or Austin, Texas; Columbus or Akron, Ohio; Oklahoma City; Omaha, Neb.; Raleigh/Durham, N.C.; Birmingham, Ala.; and Memphis, Tenn. well, this is what the NFL should have done all along instead of the NFL europe abortion. having said that, if they want 8 teams, portland, salt lake, san antonio, columbus, memphis, ok city, and birmingham make sense but omaha and raleigh do not. how about los angeles or las vegas?
If the league is also considering sending players from current teams as developmental players, as they did with NFLE, 8 teams would be perfect as each division could have a team to send its players to and these teams, for the most part, be set up regionally for convenience...a team in Omaha would make perfect sense for teams from the NFC North, where NC would make perfect sense for the South divisions...
I wonder if the New Jersey Generals will be returning? By the way, what ever happened to the UFL anyway???
eh, raleigh is too close to charlotte and omaha is too close to kansas city. i would think they would want teams either in really large markets or far away from the nearest nfl team. how about south carolina or new mexico? they don't have a team in their states and they've got some decent population and they're far away from any nfl teams?
New Mexico isn't very attractive unless it's Santa fe or Alberque Utah would be good IMO San Antonio would be sweet bc there no competition football wise unlike Austin where longhorns would win that battle Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
& behind the scenes, talks are about a possible down the road migration to the USFL if the NFL concussion assault makes staying around too expensive.
this had crossed my mind but i don't think it would really help the owners. they'll still get sued either way. if i own a business that's getting sued, changing the name of my corporation doesn't completely eliminate all the lawsuits. They could still sue me personally and if they can prove i moved all the money into the new business, they could sue for that too.
Not thinking in terms of 'hiding in plain sight' under a new name but a liquidation of sorts with inside tracks to USFL 'perks'. They're business men 1st & when it no longer gives them the margins they've grown accustomed to while running the risk of a damaged NFL product down the road, I wouldn't be surprised to see this league fold up their tent. I just don't see their collective egos being sheep while former players, who knew damn well what the risks were, put a legal gun to their head to 'renegotiate' their past bad choices. I would think they're pretty well insulated from personal lawsuits & proving that they're making some money from the USFL would probably be like finding a unicorn. These silly concussion cases may gouge out a nice piece from their wallets from legal costs thru settlement but the business end will be more affected when they have to factor in the cost of future healthcare costs from 'tomorrow's' concussed MFers. That may be the proverbial straw... Now excuse me, Cap'n... I have to go work on my lawsuits against a few companies that didn't warn me about the noise levels of their power tools I used all my life i.e. Porter Cable, Makita, Delta, Bosch, DeWalt, Craftsman, etc., etc., etc. Then I'm onto Phase II for the lawn mowers/weed wackers I've owned...John Deere, MTD, Troy-Bilt, Cub Cadet, etc., etc., etc., for obnoxiously loud products. Then Phase III where I sue the stereo/speaker giants...Sony, Mitsubishi, Kenwood, Alpine, Bose, Infinity, etc., etc., etc., for making volume knobs that go to 10. Damn, wrist is hurting from all this typing on this keyboard....whoa... mmmm....Phase IV???
