Amani Toomer may have raised the ire of the Giants fans who once cheered him on but he didn't back off his Tony Romo is better than Eli Manning remarks Friday, Hank Gola of the New York Daily News reports. Toomer, appearing on ESPN Radio with Michael Kay, said he researched the stats beforehand and that they point to the Cowboy QB. "I'm not dissing Eli," he told Kay. "It's more of an affirmation of Tony Romo and how good he is." Toomer's argument is that Romo's stats are better and that Manning has been on better teams with better support, hence his eight playoff wins (and two Super Bowls) to Romo's one. "Of course he's proved he can do it but he's proved that he could do it within the function of a great team, a great organization, the same head coach and he's been in the same system the entire time," he said of his ex-teammate. "I talked with Zach Thomas who played with Tony Romo under Wade Phillips and he said it was a joke. They were listening to rap music before the practices. They weren't focusing in at all. And what's Tony Romo going to do in that type of situation? "There are a lot of advantages that Eli has had and I realize that he's taken advantage of them but you've got to look at the numbers and how productive Tony Romo has been over his entire career and you've got to match up the numbers." In fact, Toomer took that a little further. "I think you belittle the rest of the Giants by saying Eli's won eight playoff games, Eli's won this," he said. "He has but he's been on some really good teams that jelled well together on these playoff runs." Toomer said he was ready to pile on Romo a couple of weeks ago, but was doing some show prep for his SIRIUS radio show with Tom Ryan when he began to look at Romo differently. "I was all set ... Romo's no good, he's a fourth-quarter choke and then I started doing my job," he said. "I started looking at the numbers, I started looking at the fourth quarter statistics. I started looking at the quarterback rating and was shocked. I was shocked at how good Tony Romo's statistics really were. This guy is very impressive." "I love Eli. I respect the hell out of him," he said. "But I've got to do my job and go beyond what the perception is because perception doesn't go hand in hand with the reality."

    Screwin dumbbutt.

Eli was top 5 last year. And proved himself once again when the season truly matters: the postseason.

Toomer still trying to stir the pot to stay in the headlines.

Crazy as it sounds, can't say he doesn't have an interesting point. Tony would undoubtedly been in a much better place.

As many good things Eli has done, there's multitudes he's f'd up when it counted.

When you break down the stats, they are very similar. A place where Eli excels is on third down yardage per attempt. Romo is in the 7 yard per attempt range...which is good, but Eli's in the 10 yard per attempt range which is outrageously good. It's hard to say Romo is better at this point. It's not like either of them stink. They are both quality NFL starters...

True but I think Eli has benefited from a better OL/& in turn WRs thru that same time frame. Tony had to make a lot of his time around that pocket.

Definitely one of the areas Romo excels. He doesn't throw a lot of third down Interceptions. I think he's very good at extending a play and taking the sack if need be instead of throwing an interception.

Prior to last year this argument could have been made.

I have no idea how anyone who was paying attention to Eli Manning last season could say Romo is better. I absolutely freaking hate it, but Manning was probably top 3 last year really.

Romo is a good QB, until the 4th quarter, until December. Period. If it came down to crunch time, I'd pick Eli over Romo.

Romo has had talent around him. he has 1 playoff win. Eli has 2 superbowl rings. There's another stat you can add into the argument.

Super Bowl ring don't automatically make you better

By that count Trent Dilfer is better than Dan Marino

That argument applies in certain situations.

    Not this one.

This debate never gets old.. Until Romo wins in the post season there is no reason to bring this up. At the end of the day it is all about winning Rings. Eli has 2.. Romo has nadda. :icon_cry:

Romo's 4th quarter stats aren't terrible by any means...

Don't get me wrong, I like Eli over Romo, but I think Romo gets a real bad wrap. He's a good QB and not as terrible as people say. His 4th quarter numbers are very, very similar to Drew Brees. Last season, 10 TDs and 2 INT. Not terrible...

His Decembers sure suck. Don't even ask about his Januarys.

True...but a stat that a lot of people overlook is the Cowboys strength of schedule in December has been far and away the most difficult on their schedule.

    September - 0.404
    October - 0.497
    November - 0.460
    December - 0.557
    January - 0.688

Tough titty. You want to be considered elite? Win when it counts the most.

People want to look at stats and in this day and age of fantasy football it seems people only see numbers. In the real world however, results matter. No way Romo will ever be better than Eli. Eli's two rings better. 'Nuff said.

I like to try and look beyond the everyday stats and look at the situational stats to get a better feel on how the guy plays in certain situations. Kind of gives you a better feel for the kind of player the guy really is...

Romo's stats may not be horrible. But what has he done to change the game when his team needs it, when it counts. He had that chance last season. He didn't do it.

Comparing his 4th quarter stats to Brees is one thing. Winning the game, making the plays and throws that Brees makes most of the time, is another. Not only Brees, but Brady. Manning. Rodgers. Romo will never be considered elite on a legit level until he steps his game up, no matter if it's September or December. Win more than one playoff game, or even get to the playoffs.

Ever realize that MOST of the people that say Romo is great, or elite..are usually fans of the team he plays for? Which, having belief in your QB is fine. Taking it to this level, is another thing when nothing he has done merits such hype.
