Coach, Teammates Think Cardinals QB Kevin Kolb Proved His Toughness Vs Rams

The Rams sacked Cardinals QB Kevin Kolb nine times and he went down eight times against the Dolphins in Week 4. That type of beating isn't sustainable, but Whisenhunt does applaud Kolb for his toughness.

"I think he answered a lot of questions about that," the coach said Friday, via The Associated Press. "People were questioning his toughness or his ability to play in one of those kinds of games. He certainly did that."

To be fair, critics were questioning everything about Kolb up to and including his toughness but this is what happens when you've signed to a $63 million extension and are outplayed by the backup. However, the concern wasn't whether he could withstand the physical punishment that comes with playing in the NFL; there are doubts about his ability to play quarterback. And while Kolb has shown improvement in recent weeks, it remains an issue.

"A lot of people said he wasn't tough. He'd been knocked out of a couple of games. He'd gotten some shots put on him," Cardinals guard Daryn Colledge said. "But he's willing to stand in there and get a bloody nose. He's proved that, and we want to keep fighting for him. We take that personal. We want to protect him."

Apparently you're not taking it personal enough.

Yeah really. That O-line was pathetic the other night. Kolb was getting blasted all night. He hung in there alright. He couldn't hit the side of a barn, but he hung in there.

As long as his toughness results in them going 0-2 against the Rams then he can be "tough" as much as he likes.

Biggest issue I had was he didn't make the throws when they were there all night. What good is a QB if he's untouched and inaccurate?

We call that QB Alex Smith.

Thing I don't get is he's shown that he takes hits and gets up, but he's still the same stare down his primary QB who doesn't know how to avoid the big losses and horrendous throws into coverage. He may be tough (according to his O-Linemen), he's just not worth a crap.

Did anyone even complete a pass in the 3rd quarter of that game?

I don't think so, but I can't believe you called that a game. NFL Films needs to donate that to FearNet.

If you loved D-line play (and I am a HUGE fan) it was fun to watch them tee'ing off on Thursday night. Here's the thing though. So Kolb hung in there, so what? He still sucked. The Cardinals need to either sign an impact free agent or draft someone early to groom at QB. Kolb is not the answer, Skelton is a backup at best.

well, you guys are right. he's just not a very good QB at this level.

as far as the 'toughness', I actually thought when i was watching the game that his body language was somewhat childish at times. there were a couple of times when he showed anger and a couple of times when it looked like he was trying to garner pity by overexaggerating the hits.

I agree CaptainStubing. Just too many homers down here don't see it. Jaworski calls Kolb a good backup and nothing could be truer. How many times during that fiasco did Janoris Jenkins look like Kolb's primary receiver?

SteveRobWhatever - Just my opinion, but I think the Cards have that guy on their roster right now. Ryan Lindley just may be a diamond in the rough and should be groomed to take over....but that's me. Some agree, some disagree. But after showing what the Cards truly have to offer on the O-Line, the front office MUST make a serious commitment to addressing that before a QB. No vet would want to come here and prove that he's tough by being decapitated every game. Why do you think Peyton Manning passed on the Cards? The Cards had everything, esp. his relationship with Whiz, except an O-Line to protect him. He'd probably be a quadriplegic right now and he knew it.

And if any Steelers fans want Russ Grimm back, please figure out a way to get him. Hall of Fame player....yes. O-Line coach....absolutely not.
