um, i don't know how we can gauge anything from a QB playing against the Bills defense. they have made mark sanchez, matt cassell, and brandon weeden all look like legit starting nfl qb's this year.......... and that is QUITE a feat.

    ok =P

    Both teams are 4-1,
Both teams have scored 149 points
Bears have held their opponents to 71 points. 49ers have held their opponents to 68.
Both teams have 17 offensive TDs
Jay Cutler has thrown 7 TD passes. Alex Smith has thrown 8.
Jay Cutler has thrown 7 INT passes. Alex Smith has thrown 1.
Jay Cutler has thrown for 1209 yards. Alex Smith has thrown 1,087.
Jay Cutler has 14 rushes for 48 yards(3.4 per carry). Alex Smith has 18 rushes for 107 yards(5.9 yards per carry)
Jay Cutler has a 78.7 quarterback rating. Alex Smith has a 108.7(BEST IN THE LEAGUE)

How anyone can still say Cutler is better then Alex must think this is still 2009 or 2010.

LOL at Total QBR being a legitimate indicator of a Quarterback.

Why these two guys to compare?

Smith is a system QB where minimizing mistakes and controlling the ball is his forte and Cutler is the guy the organization needs to carry the team for success. Not that the Bears and 49ers are on par with each other, but if the two QB's switched teams, in my opinion both teams would be worse off.

I'm a Card's fan and a QB (and O-Line and O-Line coach) away from true success. If I had to choose between Smith or Cutler to run the show in AZ I'd take Cutler simply because he has greater potential down field with the receivers we've got. Again, just an opinion. I dunno.....tough to compare.

Bears dont need cutler to carry the offense look at the stats the defense has held their opponents to about the same amount of points and both offenses have the same amount of TDs but Smith has more TDs thrown this year then Cutler and has less INT. Higher Completion percent and maybe 24 thrown yards less per game.

Stop acting like Cutler is on some garbage team. The teams are similar but Alex is outplaying him.

Maybe he has less interceptions because the coaching staff is more careful with him because he can't throw the ball like cutler. They bears aren't scared to let cutler free ball it.

it is somewhat amazing, isn't it?

i think it probably has so much life because these 2 QB's are 2 of the most perplexing, mysterious qb's in the league so you get a lot of varying opinions on them.

if the thread had been Brady or Rodgers, everyone would have just said, 'they're both awesome so stfu'. if the thread had been cassell or sanchez, everyone would have just said, 'they both suck ballz so it really doesn't matter'.

a lot of people feel one or both of these guys has the ability to be elite but circumstances have held them back (lack of receivers or a bad system or coaching problems, blah blah blah) so it gets a lot of conversation going.

    Great topic and great comparison.

For what it's worth, Tannehill threw for 400 + yards against the Cards with "crappy" WRs.

this was the 1st game i missed in 3 seasons so i dont know how exactly kno how it played out. however i know smith was effective in the redzone. elite teams beat who they surpose to beat. as for that viking game... i want a rematch. it was a lucky win. i could throw the refs under the bus but i have already.

18/19 232 yards 3 tds is yet another thing Alex has done that no other QB has ever done. Most attempts with only 1 incompletion another record under Alex Smiths belt

If this was any other QB in the world not named Alex Smith there would be no argument that Alex is better.

Can someone please make an argument for Cutler thats not living in the past?

This will be a never ending argument lol

If i had to choose one of those qbs on my team would still be cutler but yea alex smith has better stats then cutler but you gotta look beyond the stats. Yes cutler has alot more interceptions but he bombs it down field way more then alex does. That would be like a nba player being 1 for 2 50% from 3 point range and another being 8 for 17 from 3.The 2nd has a lower percentage but took way more shots. Thats why looking at only numbers doesent tell the whole story.

I've said it already, and I will say it again. Using only stats to prove an argument is weak sauce, it's like the three little pigs, using only stats in an argument is like building a house out of straw, it's not very sturdy.

Jay Cutler will always force throws that arnt there. That alone makes him a worse QB then Alex Smith.

Yea so Alex Smith is better than Brett Favre too. Good argument.
