When Joe Banner stepped down as team president, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie extended general manager Howie Roseman's contract for an additional four to five years, Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports citing a team source. In June, when he first announced a "succession plan" with Roseman and new president Don Smolenski assuming most of Banner's responsibilities, Lurie said that Smolenski signed a multi-year deal. He would not elaborate on Roseman's contract, however, except to say that he had an existing deal. It turns out that deal - Roseman had one or two years left - grew exponentially after the 37-year-old GM's first two years on the job. With the Eagles a disappointing 3-5 this season and coach Andy Reid as close as ever to losing his job, Roseman's contract situation gives him seemingly more security beyond this season. If he returns he will likely play an important part in choosing Reid's successor should Lurie fire his long-time coach. Source: The Redzone
haha. i find it amusing that a team in shambles would be extending anyone's contract who is related to the disaster ............. and, yes, roseman is at least partly to blame for this abortion.
why would you give your GM a new deal when your team is crapting the bed. I would think there are more important things to worry about other then extening your GM
What's a GM's job? To field the best group of men possible to win football games. Since he has been there, he has done that. He isn't head coach. He isn't a coordinator. He isn't a position coach. Howie's job is to get players. And he has done that. I don't blame him at all for this crap we are suffering through.
He's got to accept part of the blame. Asomugha for instance. Why dole out that kind of cash if the guy doesn't fit the teams scheme? That money could've been spent in better places...maybe on the O-Line and keep Samuel and DRC?
The O-Line seemed fine. No one thought that it's be an issue. Jason Peters is arguably the best LT in the game, Herremans is a stud and the other 3 are solid enough so if healthy, they're fine. Right now 4/5 starters are hurt. As far as Aso he was the top guy available and they took a shot at him. 22 is a ? as he's getting older but I wouldn't mind in. Sure he gets some of the blame but for the most part he's brought in talent and kept them under the cap. I'm glad he's sticking around.
Asomugha was the best cornerback in football. You change your coverage scheme if you can snatch away a player like that in FA. And there is also the issue of Samuel pairing up with DRC or Nnamdi. Having one zone corner and one bump-and-run corner doesn't work. They should have benched Samuel and started Nnamdi and DRC last year. They did spend money on the line. They resigned Mathis. Extended Herremans. Kelce and Peters were quality and Watkins was a first rounder so he was going to be the starter regardless. Still don't see how this was Howie's fault AT ALL.
maybe, just maybe, thos guys arent as good as we thought ? i mean i got a ton of grief for stating this oline even when healthy was average. especially in the interior. it's not like vick just started getting plastered this season. granted vick is a part of the sack/protection problems but the oline needs to take the majority of blame. then the refusal to play to the olines strengths more and avoid weaknesses.
i guess the only things i would ask you to consider is: #1--do you feel roseman has really brought in players that are quality teammates and right for their system (which is his job)? #2--can you really call the eagles last few drafts successful?
1. Nnamdi Asomugha - sure he's the best corner, but if he doesn't fit the system and you aren't willing to change which you think would be discussed, the signing is a waste. 2. Defensive players drafted since 2008 - 26. Offensive Lineman drafted since 2008 - 10.
I think the tackles were excellent, Mathis was very good, Kelce was decent, and Watkins sucked. I'll take that any day. So would Shady. Only person who had issues with the line was the dude who lacks in just about every critical area as an NFL QB.
1) Yes. Feel free to provide examples of what players you thought were bad acquisitions. 2) Four starters out of the 2011 draft and the first five picks in 2012 were outstanding. 2011 was somewhat underwhelming overall but if we got four starters every year, we'd be good to go.
1) well, i'm not sure if there have been a ton of bad signings. in many cases, we don't really know if these players are good teammates and right/wrong for a system. i was mainly asking you to consider if roseman has really done such a great job in free agency since you know your team better than me. all i know for sure is that they appear to be having enormous chemistry issues and the players are not living up to their hype, which may or may not stem from bad signings. it could just be poor coaching but i think we have to at least consider that maybe player personnel decisions are playing a part in all of this. 2) well, just because they're 'starters' doesn't mean they're actually any good. right now, most of those guys don't appear to be good nfl players.
1) Young and Brown were kinda dumb, but they don't really count. They were one year deals and, crap... if you told me I could get Ronnie Brown for one year when we didn't really have a viable backup otherwise? I'd still do that today. But Cullen Jenkins was an excellent fit. He was on fire the first half of last year and fizzled out. Jason Babin had 18 sacks last year (mostly because of the wide 9, but it was still production). The Asomugha deal... look, if you have a chance to swoop in and take the best corner in football, let alone the best player in free agency that year, away from a division rival (he was talking heavily with the Cowboys), you pull that damn trigger. Especially when the day prior you traded for one of the best young man-coverage corners in the game. Again... it isn't Howie's fault they tried to put Asomugha in a zone scheme so as to not piss off Asante. The personnel was there to switch to bump-and-run secondary and the coaches chose not to. Vick and his $100,000,000 is a whole 'nother story, but I'm pretty sure this was Reid's doing to get Vick 'back on track' financially. 2) Agreed. But Watkins was supposed to be the most surefire pick in possibly the entire draft, if not only all of the offensive linemen. Jarrett looked great on film, but that was just a true crap pick in retrospect. Marsh is our backup corner (essentially #3), Alex Henery is our kicker for the next ten years, Kelce is a quality starter, and Havili appears to have secured a starting role at fullback. We certainly have had worse drafts in the past...
The Eagles have drafted horribly on the defensive side of the ball for years! Can't really say that...yet...based on the last couple...have to see how that pans out. But they've been bad at that...and they continually get credit for doing so well in the draft, when the opposite is true.
In general, you're right. Absolutely right. Defensively they have been pretty bad. But this thread is about Roseman. Just earlier this year he helped draft Fletcher Cox in the first, Kendricks in the second, and Boykin in the fourth. All were excellent picks considering where they were picked. Will they pan out? Who knows. But they were very good picks given the info they and everyone else had at the time.
