NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Open To Eliminating Kickoffs

New Giants owner John Mara said last April the NFL has been considering eliminating kickoffs in the future and he might not be too far off.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in an article in TIME magazine he discussed with Rich McKay, chair of the NFL competition committee a rule proposed by Bucs coach Greg Schiano that instead of kicking off after a team scores a touchdown or field goal, they would then take the at their own 30 yard line and go for a 4th and 15 where they could try to pickup 15 yards to keep control of the ball or punt.

Goodell points out that high speed collisions that occur during kickoffs are the most dangerous plays in football.

"I don't do things for public relations," Goodell said. "I do things because they're the right thing to do, because I love the game."

why don't we go ahead and eliminate punts too and just do like they do in peewee football and mark off a certain amount of yardage for a pretend punt and then switch possession.

At the current pace, I'd say about 2 years.

Kickoffs are boring 99% of the time. I wouldn't cry about them being eliminated.

TheDuke - No more kickoffs, punt returns, horse-collars, chop blocks, illegal contact to the head and more if we follow the wisdom of Mr. Goodell. And let's not hurt the feelings of the players either...no more keeping score.

i disagree. even though now most of them are touchbacks, there have still been 10 of them run back for TD's this season and those can be big game-changers. The music city miracle would have never existed if not for kick offs.

in addition, what would they do to replace on-side kicks?

Too many games would be over much earlier than they are currently in 2-possession games.

History has shown that when the receiving team is expecting an onside kick, the kicking team is still successful about 20% of the time and it has made for some amazing finishes.

kick-off and punt returns can be some of the most exciting and momentum-changing plays in a game. They are part of the game and should not be eliminated.

Nah. I'd rather have more standard plays than kick returns. Like the article stated, the scoring team would be given a 4th and 15 from their own 30 after a score. That would replace an onside kick.

I understand why so many are jumping against this possible rule change, but it's only because you are only used to the game with kick-offs. I've long thought they are boring as hell.

Just move the spot back 5 yards like it used to be. It's just ridiculous that the NFL refuses to accept the fact that injuries are inevitable.

Wonder what the players think about this instead of the $20,000,000 man.
