The Baltimore Ravens have dismissed offensive coordinator Cam Cameron and replaced him with quarterbacks coach Jim Caldwell, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Source: The Redzone
Ravens fans I interact with have been highly critical of him making Flacco the center of the offense, when they feel it should be Ray Rice. This close to the playoffs, and considering Jim Caldwell is his replacement is interesting though.
Christmas came early this year!!!! lol...Seriously though, This was a much needed move. Cam's offense is dated, he was a control freak, routinely got out-coached in game due to his poor adjustment skills, limited route tree, lack of creativity, i really could go on and on. The Ravens likely now will finally allow Joe more freedom, utilize the short pass game, utilize the no huddle alot more and communication will be alot better because Joe will actually have a OC he gets along with.
eh, play callers are always the most-hated coach on any staff so i'm sure ravens fans are ecstatic but that doesn't really mean anything. The more i think about this, the stranger it seems. 1) the 5 years of cam cameron as O-coordinator have been the 5 most productive offensive years in ravens history. 2) the timing of this can not be explained as anything but completely bizarre. we are in mid-december !!! the ravens are almost a sure lock to make the playoffs. To make a change this close to january and playoff time is truly strange. I have a feeling this was not a performance or results-based firing. I think something else is going on here.
i'm racking my brain and i can't think of any team in the history of the league that almost assuredly was headed to the playoffs and fired a coordinator in mid-december ................ anyone got anything?
Been a long time coming. Joe and Cam never ever got along. New beginnings, so be it. Timing is not all that great but we will see what John is made of. Jim is probably not the long term answer. Kudos again to the powers that be that is not hesitant to fire a guy with 2 years still left on his contract just like Billick.
apparently i'm the only person that feels the timing of this is bizarre, strange, and unprecedented........... we will see if people feel differently if the ravens flop in the playoffs and lose a game while scoring only 13 points and being out of sync .................
It's not just the playcalling, its truly everything i broke down above. Add to that the disconnect between him and Joe and the disconnect that started between him and the coaches. Cam is great man by all accounts but besides his short comings as a play caller and mind he's also very stubborn. The Ravens arent gonna completely change the system on the fly, they will still employ the air coryall system but incoporate more shorter routes, more motion, more no huddle and most importantly more freedom for Joe. When he's allowed to run the no huddle and make checks at the line good things happen. I cannot stress how much this will help us going forward.
i'm not arguing that cameron was the best fit for this team (although i just read in a different article that caldwell has never called a play in the nfl, which has to be somewhat concerning). i'm saying the TIMING of this move doesn't make any sense. making major transitions like this (changing on the fly, as you put it) is NOT something teams do right before Christmas when they are locked into the playoffs. I'm very comfortable in saying that this was not a performance/results-based decision. something else happened. there was a feud or something like that.
Also factor in Flacco's contract situation, they have to make a big money decision on him very soon and couldnt adequately evaluate just how good he can be with Cam here.

What's that say about a guy wasn't he kicked from Dolphins too? Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
It's very much performance based. Let me give you some background Capt. Our owner was set to let Cam go last offseason, Harbs talked him out of it. Harbs said he'd become more hands on with the offense and when Jim Caldwell was brought in he installed the no huddle. Harbs pushed heavily for this and wanted to run it as much as possible because we are truly at are best in it. Cam continued to resist to the point where we didnt run it much at all over the last few weeks. He had disconnects with coaches and players, his relationship with Joe was non-existent. We scored points but we are in the bottom 3rd in time of possession and 3rd down conversions. Our defense is too banged up and unathletic for us to make a run this year leaning on are D in any way. The offense has to be better, more efficient and more modern(see 1970's air coryell). Sure there is risk involved with having making the move when we did but we had long hit our ceiling with Cam, this move is for the best short and long term. It's not like they are gonna run a totally different scheme, it's gonna be the same offense this season with alot more no huddle, shorter routes with a focus on the middle of the field and most importantly a O.C. that is gonna finally get out of the way and let Joe be the QB.
well, the ravens play calling was very conservative today and the offense in general was very sluggish. thus far, this looks like a move that is going to backfire big-time on the ravens. of course, someone said changing O.C.'s in mid-december when the offense was performing at a decent level was a big mistake ................
