Ravens CB Cary Williams Calls 49ers 'Fake Tough Guys, Pretenders'

After beating the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl and getting into a scrap with fullback Bruce Miller, Ravens cornerback Cary Williams wasn't shy in his opinions about his NFC counterparts, Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reports.

"To me, I feel like the 49ers are pretenders," Williams said. "They're fake tough guys. You got to play football. We do it physical and we do it between the whistles. They were diving on piles, shoving people from behind. They can try to pretend they're physical, but we really are."

It got chippy in the second quarter with a series of fights breaking out and offsetting personal fouls given to cornerback Corey Graham and 49ers offensive tackle Joe Staley.

Williams lost his temper, repeatedly giving the business to Miller with a flurry of punches. Williams shoved an official, who was trying to restrain him, away in an effort to get more shots in on Miller.

Williams was fortunate to not be ejected.

"I didn't know it was a ref," Williams said. "It was just a reaction. It was a scrum. I feel bad about the situation. It was just a reaction. That's not the way to act. I just wanted to protect my teammates."

Screw him. He should have been ejected for throwing punches and shoving a ref. where was the no tolerance when it comes to officials?

i've been frustrated about the contact with the refs that has been going un-flagged all season .............. i think we're going to see a re-commitment from the league in the off-season to have a no tolerance policy towards players and coaches putting a hand on any ref. It has happened WAY more this season than any other and if they don't put a stop to it immediately, it's going to get out of control.

the rule is supposed to be that if a player or coach lays a finger on a ref, they are to be immediately ejected from the game but the refs have not been doing it all year and they are rarely flagging it.

It's easy to talk crap AFTER you win the SB....Never even heard of Williams until the fight last night, he's sooooooooooo significant...

i dont think the rule says you touch a ref and you automatically get thrown out of the game

the refs can throw a flag and also can group up or whatever and talk it over and decide if the player should be ejected

im probably wrong but i didnt think official contact was a black and white rule i thought it had lean way on the situation

The 49ers were used to being the bullies on defense...then they played the Ravens who come from the AFC North where they play the Steelers two times a year and they both go head to head each season for who the bigger bully is on defense.

Ummm neirher defense bullied anyone when you come down to it but 7 of the ravens points came from a kick return. the niners still outgained the ravens by 101yards. 182 of the niners offense came on the ground.

So do the math mr willaims.

One thing he was right that 49ers are/were fake, however his reactions towards the players and officials were stupid.... "protecting my team mates"...don't forget u are playing football - ur not boxing....

That "great" defense getting lumped up and exposed for pretenders by a kid in his first NFL start must still be stinging.
