Michael Boley said it was “a bit of a surprise†when Giants general manager Jerry Reese called him today. After Boley’s four seasons with the Giants, and with one year left on his five-year, $25 million contract, the team released the veteran linebacker. “They let me know they’re moving things for the team in a different direction,†Boley said when reached by phone tonight. Boley’s could be the first of a series of changes made to the Giants defense, which finished 31st in the league and gave up a franchise record total yards. They signed Boley in 2009 as a top free-agent target, and he started the past four seasons at weak-side linebacker, including during last year’s Super Bowl XLVI championship. After the Giants stumbled to miss the playoffs in 2012 with a 9-7 record, it was clear some changes to their veteran core may be coming. Source: Newark Star Ledger
Corey Webster will be outtie too. Need to resign Stevie Brown for sure and maybe Kenny Phillips, but thats tough cause the dude is made of glbutt.
hmmmm .......... i have to say that i'm not sure i really understand releasing all of these guys. 1) In the cases of canty, webster, and boley, do they really have anyone better to replace them with? 2) personally, i don't think the giants problem is a lack of talent. they've admitted themselves that their problems on defense were from a lack of motivation. now, maybe the team is thinking that bringing in some new blood will 'motivate' the rest of the defense to play with more effort but, personally, i think all of this could be fixed with proper coaching/motivation techniques.
its all just a matter of freeing up cap space. Maybe its time to use our DE Marvin Austin who is supposed to be pretty sick. Also its probably time to use our young guys at LB, and possibly move Kiwi back to the line. Secondary is my only concern, but then again im completely confident in Jerry Reese.
