As expected, the Eagles will take advantage of a provision in Michael Vick’s contract and won’t release the quarterback before a Wednesday deadline guarantees him $3 million, sources close to the situation said. The clause permits the Eagles to keep Vick on the roster until the start of free agency starts on March 12 without having to pay the guaranteed figure as long as another team picks him up or pays him more than $3 million. Wednesday was once thought to be D-day for Vick and the Eagles, but the offsetting provision buys new coach Chip Kelly some time before he has to make a decision on the 32-year-old quarterback. The Eagles aren’t expected to bring Vick back at the $15.5 million salary in his contract. It is unclear if either side would be willing to renegotiate. Vick will have suitors if the Eagles release him. Source: Philadelphia Inquirer
Meh... Worst case scenario, they've paid $3M to ensure they want to release him. Teams do this a lot actually...from my understanding, it's usually a million dollars put in the clause.
the eagles have a crapload of cap space to work with. they're actually in about the best position of any team in the league. i can't imagine though from a cash perspective they would keep vick on the roster this year and pay him $16 mill unless chip just absolutely loves the guy.
Actually, I've heard conflicting reports, some have the Eagles over the cap and others have them at about $5.2M. They really aren't all that well off at the moment. One report I've seen has them at about $18M over the cap with Vick counting $17.3, Aso counting $15.3 and Peters counting $10.75.
but are those numbers using $121 mill as the eagles cap number? the eagles are going to carry over about $23 mill in cap space so the eagles cap number is actually going to be $144 mill in 2013, which gives them a ton of room.
No. When they carry the $23M, that only gives them the ball park $5.2M in cap space. It's not as much as we all thought it would be.
interesting. so, if they do cut vick they could open up a lot of cap space. although, i would imagine the eagles are going to be a lot more hesitant about signing expensive free agents since it flopped so badly for them so they may not even use the cap space. i would guess this organization is looking to build through the draft in the future.
