Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said there is a “reasonable†way for the team to retain free agent linebacker Anthony Spencer and prevent him from exploring the open market but Jones also explained “you can’t have it all.â€

“We are going to have to pick our spots to spend this money,†he added.

The contract figure Jones has in mind for Spencer “is much less than he is going to take.â€

Last season, Spencer, 29, played with an $8.8 million franchise tag. The Cowboys could peg Spencer with the same designation, but it would cost $10.6 million to do so this season. Spencer is expected to be highly-coveted after led the team in tackles this past season with 95 stops, recorded a career-high total of 11 sacks, and was invited to his first Pro Bowl.

“With what he’s likely to make,†Jones said, “we’re going to be able to take that and really help our team either with him or maybe with a couple of other players.â€

He needs to go to another 3-4 team. I think he is a better linebacker than he will be defensive end. Let him walk try to get a free agent or see if victor butler can excel at d-end. I say see if we can get Dwight freeney for cheap I mean real cheap let him be a 3rd down pass rusher only he won't make an entire season playing every down.

He seems to get hurt a lot. I'd pass on him.

Spencer has always been a more effective rusher on subpackages with his hand in the dirt. He plays with good leverage which is key in a 4 man front, but doesn't have the explosive first step to be a top rusher in a 3-4

Exactly spencer has never been good in coverage as 3-4 lbs have to be able to do.

Spencer IMO will excel as a de as he did in college. In a 4-3 system where he can rush the qb and stuff the run. No more dropping back in to coverage.

    I don't see him walking.

We rarely enter negotiations with a player before FA and not get it done

I know you all want him back and see that happening. Just commenting based on the content of the thread that indicated otherwise. I'd love to have him in Cleveland, and he'd be a huge step toward making the defensive switch.

A lot of us don't which I goobered. He's been a stud for years even if this is the first year its really shown on the stat sheet.

Jones tagged him when he had never had more then 6 sacks in a season. He's knows his value

I think Jones is postureing a tad. I think he is trying to drive the price down a bit. I could be wrong, or I could be right and it blows up in his face. But I see Spencer back

Lots of arguing, but lots of makeup s*x too. And I dont just mean a reconciliation penetration, I mean that they would put makeup on each other and then bang.
