Pete Carroll and John Schneider have never been afraid to think outside the box when it comes to building a football team, and that's what they did once again in adding tight end Darren Fells, who signed with the team Tuesday. The signing was first reported by NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. Fells, who is 6-foot-7, played college basketball, not football, at UC Irvine, and has played hoops overseas in Belgium, Finland, France, Mexico and most recently in Argentina, according to this bio. According to Fells' UC Irvine bio, he was an all-state tight end in high school. He's the younger brother of Patriots TE Daniel Fells. Source: The Herald
i've always wondered why more teams did not grab some of these athletic big-men from basketball and turn them into tight ends. so many of the skills they learn in round ball translate to the position.
