The only hold-up to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' acquisition of cornerback Darrelle Revis was a physical to ensure that his surgically repaired knee was satisfactory to the team's medical staff.

Mission accomplished as Revis has agreed to terms with the Buccaneers on a six-year, $96 million contract, a source informed of the negotiations tells NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. The deal averages $16 million annually, making Revis the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter. However, the deal includes no guaranteed money.

In return for the three-time All-Pro, the New York Jets will receive the No. 13 overall pick in the 2013 draft in addition to a conditional 2014 fourth-rounder that bumps to a third-rounder if Revis is on the Bucs' roster on the third day of the 2014 league year.

Easy for him to holdout in 2014 after making the Pro Bowl...

More win for Revis: Assuming Revis compensation was $16M as NJ resident (8.97 rate gross income tax state) he would pay approx $1,435,200 in state tax.

Bucs gonna have a decent pass defense this year??? Maybe only give up 270 yards a game thru the air this year?

when asked about the possibility of revis holding out again in the future, dominik says it won't happen and cited the unusual contract. .......... no guaranteed money but every year he is on the roster, he gets $16 mill.

i really don't feel any cornerback is worth that much money and i will be surprised if the bucs are still paying him $16 mill/season in 3 years. I think they will realize fairly quickly they are not getting the return on their investment.

The reason he won't hold out is because $16M is easily the highest paid CB and probably the highest paid Defensive Player in the league. The good thing for the Bucs if Revis doesn't perform is that deal can pretty much be ripped up by them at any time with no "problems" on their part...

Bucs have money to spend, so that's really not an issue...so if he winds up being a bust, the only thing they really lose is the money. Gambling on an elite defensive player in the league is a better gamble than a first and third round draft pick IMO...

yes, i agree that the contract is actually decent for the bucs because there is no guaranteed money so they can just cut him if it doesn't work out.

as far as the trade, i suppose you have a point that they may not have gotten much out of the 2 draft picks and revis is at least proven in the jets system so if they can utilize him well, he could still be good.

The way I look at it is they gave up a third round pick to get the best player in this "draft."

well, that's an interesting way to look at it............ let's theorize if they threw revis into this draft class, would he actually go #1 ? would teams be giving up an extra pick to move 'up' and get him, as the bucs did?

he's got a knee concern now............. he is about to turn 28 years old............ we are not sure how effective he will be outside of the jets defense............. a team would have to pay him $16 mill/yr instead of $4 mill/yr they pay to the rookies.

maybe he would be the clear #1 ............ i'm not sure though.

I'm of course basing it on the knowledge that we have. I'd do that deal everytime...especially with the Bucs pick...

It will definitely be interesting 2-3 years from now to bump this thread to see how it works out.

Going to be tough for all parties involved though...everything is going to be second guessed and under a microscope...

Always agree with this sentiment. A top three (and quite probably THE top) cornerback when healthy, you guaranteed yourself a much better shot of landing a superstar player than if those picks were used on unproven college players.

I know teams value draft picks, which they should. Get a guy fresh out of college who you can mold and you get on the cheap for four years. But I'd always take the proven guy. Especially one at the top of the list for his position.
