The Dolphins and Chiefs have agreed not to further discuss a potential trade involving Kansas City left tackle Branden Albert until after both teams make their first-round selections in Thursday night's NFL draft, Ed Werder of ESPN reports. This according to a league source. That assumes the Dolphins haven't chosen an offensive tackle with the 12th overall pick -- or haven't succeeded in moving up for one of the tackles the Chiefs ignore with the top selection. The Chiefs pick first with increasing speculation they prefer Central Michigan's Eric Fisher over Texas A&M's Luke Joeckel. If the Dolphins draft a tackle to replace Jake Long, their interest in trading for Albert will vanish, and the Chiefs then might be stuck with a player who carries a $9.8 million franchise tag who plays the same position as the player chosen first overall. Bad move on the Chiefs part...their leverage goes waaaaaaay down if they select one of the tackles...then they pretty much have to get rid of Albert.
Miami never was going to trade for him, it was a way to get leverage to possibly trade for one of the big 3 OTs.
i tend to agree. it doesn't make any sense that they supposedly were going to hand him the starting LT position, pay him a lot of money on a long-term deal, yet wouldn't give a little bit higher 2nd round pick? i don't believe that was what killed the deal. if the phins legitimately wanted him, they would have had no problem giving #42 instead of #54 . 12 spots in the 2nd round isn't enough to give up on a deal for a starting left tackle.
