Throw the kid in jail for aggravated assault or whatever. It's beyond ridiculous to assault a ref for making a call in a rec league game.............

yep, apparently he is already in a detention center..... if the guy dies, though, which it sounds like he probably will, i think it will be some sort of murder/manslaughter charge at that point, won't it?

You would think so. Assault with the intent to do bodily harm or some other type of charge.

yep, it will be interesting to see how the D.A. approaches this case and what he charges him with.

It's too bad "Sportsmanship" is lacking in a lot of these recreational games.

Everyday there are a ton of stories about unnecessary deaths, but this one for whatever reason bothers me more than most. I can't imagine how his family feels.

Probably because it's SO incredibly unnecessary and stupid. No reason for this kid to do what he did and I hope he rots in jail for the rest of his life. Everyday I see kids do dumb crap that goes unpunished and this will probably also end up the case. He'll serve 5 or 6 years in jail and then be paroled. It's dumb. We need to bring back the actual death penalty in the form of public hangings. Tell me that won't discourage some of this crap.

I was with you until the part I bolded. The butthole kid obviously way overreacted, but I don't think his intention was murder.

I didn't mean it just for this kid. I meant in general. I think instead of lethal injection they should just do public hangings and firing squads. A dude butchers my entire family and essentially gets put to sleep so he doesn't feel anything. Screw that. Hang his butt. But this kid should spend the rest of his natural life in prison.

Not to derail this thread, but I used to be pro death penalty until I discovered that it costs more to taxpayers than life in prison. Let them rot in prison instead of costing citizens more money. Plus, there have been cases where the punished was found innocent later on.

I feel badly for the victim's family. So terrible to lose a loved one this way. The assailants life is ruined as well.

Hence a public hanging. Gallows and a rope are a HELL of a lot cheaper than the lethal injection. But honestly, this kid, if he meant it or not will be spending a lot of time in a very dark place.

Why not just bring back stoning?

i would be curious to see authentic data on this. the only way it could be true is if they are calculating the court costs involved in all of the appeals for death row inmates, which could more easily be controlled with some common sense legislation but i'm sure the lawyers have figured out a way to milk the system for tons of money.

regardless, this is one subject that i am not inclined to even consider monetary costs as a talking point. we're talking about someone's life so i'm not going to stoop to the level of talking about saving a few bucks here and there.

i'm quite certain that 99% of the people who have received the death penalty in this country over the past 50 years were in fact guilty of their crimes and i am glad they faced their consequence. however, the few innocent people that may have been put to death for a crime they never committed is very disturbing and makes me inclined to not favor the death penalty at all.
