With the 2nd overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Jaguars select Texas A&M OT Luke Joeckel. A technician with an athletic build, Joeckel excels as a pass protector for the Aggies and displays enough of a temper in the run game to be one of the top picks in this draft class, and a long-time NFL starter at left tackle, especially as he continues to add bulk in an NFL strength and conditioning program.

Well, gabberts protection just improved. Will that be enough to save him though?

why am i now hearing that the jags are going to play Joeckel on the right side?

this would mean the first 2 players taken in the 2013 nfl draft are right tackles .... :jawdropper:

Never really bought into the "gotta select a LT before a RT or G" theory. Take 1988 for instance...Would you rather have Paul Gruber (a pretty good player in his time) at LT or a Randall McDaniel (Hall of Fame Guard?)

2001 - Leonard Davis (again...good player) or Steve Hutchinson?

The Jags have Monroe, who is pretty good.

eh, there are hall of fame punters and placekickers too ............ doesn't mean they're worth taking top 2 overall.

at those high positions, you want to take someone whose individual talent can stand out on the field and have a significant impact to the game. Left tackles are so much more important than RT's, guards, and centers because they are often put in one-on-one situations and they are typically working on the QB's blindside, so it is imperative that he be great.

Having said that, maybe the Jags are planning on keeping Monroe at LT for just 1 year and then moving Joeckel to the left side (again, similar to the Chiefs with Fisher).

If either or both teams, however, keep the top 2 picks at RT for the entirety of their rookie contracts, I say that they were poor picks because they didn't improve their teams enough with such high picks.

yes, and maybe the jags are planning on just having joeckel play the right side for 1 year until monroe's contract is done (similar to the chiefs with albert and fisher).

if that is the case, then i'm good with it. however, if either of these teams keep either player at RT for the entirety of their rookie contract, I say it is a poor pick.

It's the Jags, how many times have they made good picks?

and, even if either or both teams move the top picks to the left side after letting their veteran walk after 1 year, have they really improved their roster? aren't they just replacing 1 good LT with another to save some money?

I have a lot of issues with both of these picks. Regardless of which way the teams take these situations, they really haven't improved their rosters much.

It would have been much better if they traded their veteran LT's and gotten something decent back in return and then played the top picks at LT.

THAT would have possibly improved their roster. As it sits, I don't see how either team improved their roster that much.

exactly. i guess that's where i'm going with this.

With the amount of passing in the NFL, RT's are becoming more and more important and more and more teams are looking to put two "Left Tackles" on the field

Long term I think Luke is a better LT then Monroe. Monroe is easily a top 10 LT, but Joeckle has the ability to be top 3 LT.

Question is, do you extend Monroe for LT money if you are gonna move him to the right, or do you tag and trade him when his contracts runs out. He is an infinitely better LT then Albert and should be easier to find a trade partner

There are no punters in the HoF...

Obviously you want to rank positions of importance. IMO it goes QB, Pass Rusher, LT in that order. However, it's not as important any longer to "have to" select a LT as your number one pick over say a can't miss OG or RT. ideally you want to take a "can't miss player" above anything else. Even if its not a LT...and with the way the CBA is structured now, it really doesn't matter money wise...

Left tackles make twice as much money as right tackles. Monroe would never accept playing and getting paid as a RT and Joeckel and Fisher are not going to allow their teams to keep playing them at RT through their whole rookie contracts. they would all holdout and demand trades to a team that would play them at their natural (and much higher paying) position.

In Joeckel and Fishers cases, they will probably sign 4 year rookie contracts. I would say their agents will allow them to be played at RT for one season .......... maybe 2 at the most, because they need to put in some time at LT in order to get the LT-caliber contract.

I realize all of that, but It's not that much different as an NFL rookie any longer with the new CBA...it won't be until the second contract that the player really gets "paid."
