Chris Russell of ESPN 980 in Washington reported Monday that there is "competitive tension" between QB Robert Griffin III and Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan over RGIII's practice reps. Russell noted Shanahan was "stung" by the media's criticism after leaving Griffin in Washington's playoff loss to Seattle last January, even after holding RG3 out of a regular season game in which he probably could've played. Griffin just wants to play ball, and Shanahan just wants to be a smart coach. RGIII is scheduled to progress to 11-on-11 drills on Tuesday but is still pushing the coaching staff to let him see some real game action this preseason. Coach Mike Shanahan has said it "doesn't make sense" to risk Griffin's health by playing him in preseason games because the ultimate goal is to make sure he is healthy and ready to go Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles. its dumb to play him in the preseaon but its also dumb to expose him to hits from the read option every week. Hes such a great passer and an exciting runner theres no need to maximize his running by exposing him to that. Treating a franchise QB that they sold their soul to get like a rental. Its why washington is square peg in round hole champions of the universe
Shanahan is in a no-win situation, especially with the media. As long as the 'Skins win and Griffin doesn't get hurt, then Mike will live another day. Any other scenario and its Shanahan's fault.
If he's going to get hurt, better it be Week One of the regular season than Week Three of the preseason. lol BTW - I would hope my QB be pissed at me for sitting him through the preseason...shows a little fire and a little heart.
i can't blame shanny for doing things like this after the assreaming he got when rg3 blew out his leg in january.i would be mad if rg3 was'nt pissed about having to sit and do it shanny's way.
So a HC not letting a player call the shots is now "competitive tension"? :laughy18: Just when you thought you've seen & heard it all...
:laughy18: Holy crap, Ward just scooped the entire media including Jason Whitlock on the next big headlines.
