Time of possession long has been one of the most overrated statistics in football. It's broken out by lazy announcers that habitually talk about "controlling the ball" without thinking about what that means. Thankfully, new Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly can make the point better than I can. "I've heard the question about time of possession, but we've talked about all the time -- time of possession is how much time can the other team waste," Kelly told the Philadelphia media Friday via CSN Philadelphia. "Most games, we lose the time of possession, but it's how many snaps do you face? And I think in both [preseason] games we've played, we've played more snaps than our other team." Bill Belichick has said similar things over the years. Points matter. Source: NFL.com
Re: Eagles HC Chip Kelly Think Time Of Possession Is Overrated It sucks for your defense, but if you're scoring points....
Re: Eagles HC Chip Kelly Think Time Of Possession Is Overrated our defense sucks already even without the time factor lol
Re: Eagles HC Chip Kelly Think Time Of Possession Is Overrated Exactly. It sucks for both defenses. But if we are scoring points on offense and forcing three and outs, no problemo.
Seeing it as teams "wasting time" minimizes the fact that it gives you less possessions. Sure, if you score you deflect some of that lack of time but in a tight game, a team that knows how to keep moving the chains consistently, using the clock, ultimately controls the game.
i think the eagles will be a lot better.under andy reid, the offense became predictable and he basically wore out his welcome after things started going downhill a few years ago.i think the change will do them good.
Well his philosophy is that his offense will be more efficient, not allow them to substitute on defense much, and have more plays to defend than his defense. Offensive efficiency is more important than controlling the clock is his point.
It appears so. Hard to be worse than last season. We'll see once it counts. So far though, I love what I'm seeing offensively.
it will also be interesting to see if kelly gives up the screen pass cause the eagles ran that maybe better than any team in the league for a good 6 or 7 season under andy reid.
eventually if they run it at a really fast pace, the defenses of the teams they are playing are gonna get" injured" to stop the clock.:icon_cheesygrin:
It will be interesting to see what Haslett does defensively against them week 1. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
Yea, I see that point. My initial gut reaction is that while that's a good thing, it's more of an 'in an ideal world' scenario than a full season grind. Of course, I say this in front of a computer, not from an NFL sidelines. :icon_cheesygrin:
the redskins secondary is total crap, pure and simple, but the defensive line is looking a lot better than they did last year. I Think the 1st game of the year with the eagles will be a shootout because of the eagles new offense and rg3 will be rusty.i think it will come back to a td either way.
