During the second quarter of Green Bay's game with San Francisco, a fight erupted after Packers linebacker Clay Matthews was flagged for the hit on 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick on a third-and-six play, but that penalty was offset by an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty called against 49ers offensive tackle Joe Staley. After the offsetting penalties, the officials let San Francisco replay the down from Green Bay's 10-yard line and that's where they messed up, according to Mike Pereira, the NFL's former VP of Officiating.

The offsetting penalties came on a dead ball play -- the runner was out of bounds when the flag was thrown. Since the play was technically over, the down should have counted and the 49ers should have been facing fourth-and-two from Green Bay's six-yard line.

Instead, the 49ers ran a third down play from Green Bay's 10-yard line and capitalized on the officiating mistake by scoring a touchdown on a Kaepernick-to-Anquan Boldin 10-yard pbutt.

Damn, Green Bay really gets hecked by Refs early in the season.

actually, there shouldn't have been off-setting penalties there so GB didn't get hecked.

Yes there should have, both penalties were after the play. So the Packers got hecked again.

Packers totally got screwed and yes, there were offsetting penalties. Bottom line, it should have been 4th and 2. The refs gave the Niners and extra down, which played a role in the outcome of the game. Maybe the Niners go for it and still get a TD or maybe they go for a FG or go for it on 4th and get stuffed and the Packers win that game.
It sucks but what can you do? Im happy that the Packers took the Niners' best shots again and again and hung in the game. A lot of people are saying today about how the Niners dominated that game (although I dont know what game they were watching) but as I see it, the Packers proved that they can hang with what many people believe is a favorite to win the Super Bowl this year. After yesterday, this matchup became personal and Id love to see the Packers get another shot at the Niners in the playoffs.

How many shots do the Packers need? SF has beat GB 3 times straight. And what makes you think the Pack would've won that game? That play happened in the 2nd quarter, not the 4th....

GB was so consumed with not letting SF run all over the field on them again, that SF lit them up through the air, and still controlled time of possession. GB will still be a force to be reckoned with this year, but they need to stop with all the extra crap in the game. Some folks are saying they got in Kaep's head, but he seemed to be fine to me out there. If anything, the embarrassment of the performance in the playoffs last year got in the heads of GB which made them take cheap shots to prove they were tough guys.

GB should be THANKING SF, because that embarrassment made them hone their craft and made them a better football team

no one has been able to show me the actual 'penalty' that joe staley committed. I clearly saw the one matthews committed but did not see staley do anything wrong.

He grabbed Matthews and tried to shove him. That's why Clay smacked him upside the head.

The difference was 3 points instead of 7, which would have made a huge difference in the outcome of the game and how the Niners would have had to manage the game.

badger, the league has already admitted that staley did not commit a penalty. 'locking up' in that situation should not have been a penalty. See below.

Second 49ers-Packers officiating error: Joe Staley didn't commit penalty | Detroit Free Press | freep.com
A league spokesman told USA TODAY Sports on Monday that Dean Blandino, the NFL's vice president of officiating, has determined 49ers left tackle Joe Staley "should not have been penalized" for entering the scrum and grabbing Clay Matthews after the Packers linebacker hit Niners quarterback Colin Kaepernick out of bounds

That mistake surely could have changed the outcome, but how many truly feel the better didn't win?
