We’ve talked a lot about fandom over the past few months, more specifically when it is acceptable for sports fans to switch allegiances and what rights we have as fans when our teams let us down year after year with piss poor play and hair-pulling, personnel decisions. If I go to a store, a restaurant, a golf course or any company that provides me with a product or service with which I’m dissatisfied, regardless of how long I’ve been loyal to that establishment, if I don’t feel like they appreciate my patronage, I leave and never return. Don’t you? The only area of commerce where that logic does not apply is professional sports… yet perhaps it should. Here are just a few fan bases that have been getting the short end of the stick from their rather, one-sided relationships: http://sportschump.net/2014/02/13/bad-teams-bad/13290/
i have no problem with anyone switching allegiance. sports-viewing is for entertainment purposes. if you are not 'entertained' by a particular team, pick another one. it's no big deal to me.
Keep in mind too, Stoob, there are a lot of those people as well. People aren't getting stabbed and shot outside of sporting events because fans are lacksadaiscal.
I don't mind people switching. What I can't stand is people switching to the rivals. For me one of the best examples is Brooklyn Nets vs New York Knicks. You can't flip flop between the two. YOU JUST CAN'T
Jad... I would say in that particular case, it's acceptable. Let's say a person grew up in Brooklyn, and grew up a Knicks fan, and wanted to switch to a team from his own borough that finally got one. I get that. Others not so much, sacrilege, but that one yes. In the end though, it doesn't really matter as both those teams suck.
Well maybe that was a bad example because the Nets recently moved to Brooklyn but What I meant, is we have a crapload of fans who are now cheering the Nets because the Knicks sucked more than us this year. That is unacceptable
I'm sure it's happened but I don't know of anyone who has gone from rooting for the Sox to the Yankees or the Giants to the Dodgers or the insert nasty sports rivalry here. I'm no Knicks fan but I wouldn't mind seeing them finally succeed. It's been way too long for that fan base.
