Jadeveon Clowney Bench Presses Less Than A Punter At NFL Combine

You just had a funny feeling that when Clowney announced to the world last month that he was going to put up unreal numbers at the Combine he had nowhere to go but down. “I want to put up the best numbers ever seen at the NFL Combine,” Clowney said after South Carolina’s Capital One Bowl win against Wisconsin. “I will be working hard to accomplish that.”

And so it begins. True, bench press has nothing to do what the dude can do on the field, but it is already starting to get a little old hearing all the pro-Clowney folks make excuses and explain away every single hiccup pre-draft. A punter? Really?

Meh, i'm sure Clowney isn't worried about his draft stock because of this.

The 40 is the most overrated stat at the combine.

At 4.47 in the 40 I don't think GM's would care if he benched 75 lbs only 10 times.

Why has this kid received so much media attention already?

I am asking prior to this season? because he didn't do too much this season except get knocked for his work ethic. But before this season why did he get so much attention?

His stock was a lot higher after the 2012 season as you can tell by the 54 tackles with nearly half for loss along with 13 sacks and 3 FFs. But his numbers dropped off quite a bit last year, which is where all the work ethic questions came from

That's what makes him a risk. The red flags about his work ethic. He turns it on and off. When it's on, he's ridiculous...

Heard some dude (former GM) on the radio yesterday saying he wouldn't draft Clowney at all because of this. His whole deal was there are those that are physically gifted and play and then there's those that love playing the game. He doesn't think Clowney is the latter. Dunno.

I thought he took it easy because he didn't want to get injured? is that false?

A lot of people thought this about Lacy last year too. Turned out alright for Green Bay

that one hit is all you can really show of him. I have heard a lot of "experts" say that that one hit will make a GM draft him. He really haven't done much since that hit. That was a good hit.

While that is true about him slacking so as not to get hurt is true, I feel it is wrong because SC may have had a good chance to win the SEC East if he would have played balls out last season. It was wrong for him to do that to his teammates. Saying that though, not many of his teammate will make a pro roster and he had to make a business decision. Now, when his team is out of the playoff contention, will he shut it down? I think he will. I think he loves what the game can bring him. Like kitty, money and fame. Can we say kitty here?

and about his bench press woes, while it doesn't tell the whole story it does show that he is not as strong as he should be. If an athletic tackle latches on to him would he have the strength to disengage and pursue? Granted Sapp may have not done a lot in the bench press dept. but he mainly was there to eat up space and clog up the middle.
