I have to go with Pennington until Eli learns how to do more than lob deep balls to Plaxico Burress. Eli still has a chance to be an elite NFL QB though, something that can't really be said of Pennington.
For me its Pennington, ok he has had some injury worries but he came through last year fine and really seemed to connect with Coles and Cotchery, for me Eli makes to many mistakes
obviously you don't know me. I'm not a homer at all. I'm as objective as a fan can be. But Eli Manning is nothing close to Chad. And if you've watched them as much as I have, you'd know that.
Pennington is finally getting the help, that he has been needing, for years. Herm Edwards has no respect for the offensive line, nor the passing game, in general. Mangini recognized, right away, that he had to bring in pass-protectors and did that, in a big way. Pennington was finally healthy, thanks to Mangini. This year, the O-line gains continuity. The Jets could be big.
On potential it is Eli. If you needed a qb for the whole year, it would be hard to chose Chad because of his injury history. But if healthy, Chad is more accurate and in the right system he could be productive. But for long term, I would have to chose Eli.
No, because you said you weren't a homer, then made a fantastically homeristic statement. Let's compare last season: Eli: 301 Comp 522 Att 57.7% Comp 3244 yards 6.2 YPA 24 TDs 18 INTs Chad: 313 Comp 485 Att 64.5% Comp 3352 yards 6.9 YPA 17 TDs 16 INTs It's extremely debatble which one had the better 2006, and Eli CLEARLY had the better 2005, as Chad was hurt most of the season, so to say Chad Pennington is the clear cut better QB than Eli Manning a classic example of you, a Jets fan, being a homer.
I don't think anyone else is saying it's not even close. Hell, I said at this point I'd take Chad, but to say "Eli Manning is nothing close to Chad", that's a completely homer statement.
No, it's an example of me, a fan who lives in NYC and watches the Jets and Giants all seasons, knowing each QB and their limitations. One thing is clear here: You don't read my posts. If you did, you'd know I'm the farthest thing from a homer that there is. http://footballoutsiders.com/stats/qb.php yeah, I'd say it's pretty clear-cut. it's not debatable at all as to who had a better 2006. 64.5%-57.7%? 6.9 YPA to 6.2? YPA is a better indicator than any other statistic. Chad produced more yards per attempt and turned the ball over less. He clearly was better than Eli last year. better season, better career, better quarterback.
You're being a homer on this issue. I don't know where that implies that I think you're always a homer, but think what you'd like. Chad also attempted fewer passes, which, inherently, makes his success more likely. He took care of the ball ever so slightly better than Eli (INT% of 3.3 for Chad vs. 3.4 for Eli), and scored on considerably less of his plays (TD% of 3.5 for Chad vs. 4.5 for Eli). Eli had the better TD/INT ratio by a pretty large margin as well (1.25/1 vs. 1.06/1). The bottom line is Eli was a gunslinger that was a bigger part of his team's offense, whereas Chad was a game manager, and metrics like YPA and accuracy will always favor the game manager. Eli still has time to develop and mature as a QB, whereas improvement from Chad is much less likely, and considering the last two years, aka the time that Eli has been a full-time starter in the league, there's no real argument for Chad. Like I said before, right now, I'd take Pennington, but don't try to argue that it's not even a close choice, because it is.
while i would choose others over both of these qb's pennigton is the choice here. he has proven when healthy he can perform at a good level and lead his team into the playoffs
