On a field goal attempt, why is the holder lined up 7y behind the line of scrimmage? Is this a rule or some kind of habit?
Not a rule, but if it's missed, that's the spot where the opponent gets the ball so it's wise not to be too far back. Too close and too much elevation is needed to get it over the on coming rush. It's not a rule, just deemed the best spot by everyone to make kicks from.
