Trivia question. What do Mark Schlereth, Deion Sanders, Marshall Faulk, Steve Marucci, Jim Mora, Eric Allen, Mike Golic, Jerome Bettis, Tiki Barber, Randy Cross, Troy Aikman, Moose Johnston, Keyshawn Johnson, Tom Jackson, Mike Ditka, Sean Salisbury, and about a freaking zillion other guys in the "media" have in common?

I'll let you think on that one for a sec......it's a doozy.

Seems like a rather large portion of the media that you claim "knows nothing" played in some sort of professional football league. Hmmm...seems to me, if they are telling Rivers to shut the heck up (which many of them have).....boy, think maybe they have the qualifications to make such a statement?

Or do you need a DSL line and a screen name to make an accurate assertion of this situation?

What's your point? Some of those guys have defended Rivers. Just because you're an ex-player or coach doesn't make your opinion that special. The guys that are hating on Rivers the most were ex-NFL scrubs anyways (King, Salisbury). The funny thing is the guys hating the most were loud mouths when they played the game, now they're pretending like it never happened and are telling players how they should act.

Ok, so Rivers will probably be analyst someday hating on someone because he is a current NFL scrub.

SportsCenter discussion between host Mike Greenberg and analysts Merril Hoge and Mark Schlereth:

Greenberg: If he can play, is he (Rivers) mature enough to go into Foxborough and beat the Patriots?

Hoge: No. No, I don't think he is. And that's unfortunate. Actually, I know Philip Rivers, and he looks completely out of character right now with his behavior. Has he improved as a passer? Absolutely ... But when you look at the Patriots, the one thing that they are, player to a player, they are true professionals. You cannot win arguments by the fan. You can't be yelling at the fan. You can't talk to the fan. You're never going to win that verbal battle. And I don't know why Philip Rivers has done this. I'm sure the organization needs to pull him aside and say, 'Listen, you are the face of our franchise and we can't have you behaving in that manner.' And if you're going to play the Patriots you need everything on your side. The last thing you need to do is walk into that stadium and start jawing, because now they've seen this, sure, the Patriots fans will be jawing at him. Now he's just got to be composed, if he plays in this one, and he's got to take care of what he's supposed to do on the football field, not worry about those other elements.

Schlereth: I think the San Diego Chargers need to take a video clip of Ryan Leaf and say, 'Look it, you don't want to end up looking like this.'
    Hoge: He's starting to.

Schlereth: That's not what you want to look like down the road. That's not how you want people to remember you, so act like you've been there before.

Would his opinion mean more to you because he was an ex-NFL player?

They were saying the same thing before the Colts game...

People keep doubting Rivers yet, he keeps proving them wrong.

To me I don't care if you're an ex-NFL player or coach, what I care about is are you any good at your job . Most of those guys aren't, some of them are. I don't care what guys like King, Salisbury, Keyshawn, Deion etc. have to say, because they're idiots and playing in the NFL doesn't change that.

You know Jaime Dukes brought up a great point, why does Rivers get so much flack for talking trash, yet no one said anything when Brady got into the face of the Steelers safety (Smith), and no one said anything when Brady was taunting the other team during his first playoff game after scoring a TD, they came up with the taunting rule because of Brady.

Yet Brady is looked at as a great leader, and Rivers is looked at as a punk.

Why is that so? Because of the media has played up the Rivers talking and vilified him for it, while completely ignoring it when someone like Brady does it.

Here's Eric Allen defending him as well. He points out what Cutler did that wasn't seen by the TV cameras but was visible by game tape.

Hey Boltz, what's going to happen if the Chargers do lose? Think Rivers might go into a swearing barrage and blame it on the Pats' fans, or say there's no justice for the Chargers when the refs ripped them off and set them up to lose? I can't see anybody on the Chargers being good sports, I bet an ugly fight confrontation will break out before it's all over the way this is setting up if the Chargers lose.

my problem with rivers isn't his smack talk with other players.....it's his temper tantrums and smack talking with fans. rivers is a QB....the LEADER of the team, he shouldn't lower himself to that.

That's funny, because I remember people bashing him after the Cutler incident. Rivers leads just fine, and the only thing he yelled to the fans behind the bench was "Scoreboard" I mean this is the stuff you guys are getting all riled up over, and it really isn't anything.

And Darren, Rivers doesn't cuss when he's talking trash so I don't see any of that happening. Rivers is a good man he's been married since college and has 4 children, but on the field he likes to have fun and talk trash. Most people who've played football, whether in the backyard, park or HS/College have done it so people need to get over it.

    lets do this....

how many respected QB's can you name that trash talk on the field with fans and how many "other" QB's do the same?

off the top of my head i can think of ZERO respected QB's doing that......

on the other hand....."others" that do it.....ryan leaf & michael vick jump to mind

Maybe you didn't read my post, but Rivers was being bashed before that. What's the reasoning? People are looking for a reason to bash Rivers, and there are plenty of players who talk crap to fans, you just never see it on camera. Big deal.:icon_rolleyes:

I don't care who said what to Rivers, Colt fans bought their ticket and they remember the embarrassing loss to the chargers @ San Diego. Colt fans know their team was ripped off in that game, weather was bad and officiating was the craps anyway that day. Rivers should keep his mouth shut on the road. If he don't play and the Chargers lose, all blame should go to him AND THEN Norv Turner.

I'm talking about during the season where INdy met San Diego @ San Diego, NBC game, the 24-21 Charger win. The loss to the Chargers @ San Diego was a reference to the first meeting during the season! Man, call yourself a Charger fan and you already forgot that Indy and San Diego PLAYED PREVIOUSLY?
