How many times have you heard "Man this wide receiver is going into his 3rd year he is going to be huge"? Probably every year and how many times has this been true? Let me make it clear to you I always look at 3rd year WR's as well when looking for that possible mid round pick after I stocked up on 3 RB's and the talent at WR is just not there anymore. So I began thinking to myself how true is this story or little tale of the "Third Year Wide Receiver". So I decided to do a little research on current NFL players and even dug deeper into the past to see if this tale is true or false. Source
good stuff mike, i have made a living grabbing 3rd year wideouts while other guys in my league miss the boat. it's something that has helped me make the playoffs every year and routinely make the semi's or championship & bringing home the hardware two years ago.
No way. Never draft a WR who is working with a first year QB. Very seldom does it work in your favor. Of course there are exceptions like Braylon Edwards last year but generly speaking 1st time starters at QB struggle. Look at Lee Evans last year with Trent Edwards or any of the Vikings WRs. I love Jennings and he's coming of an impressive season but I have my reservations about him this year.
nice question and that will come soon. I am working on a page 2 of sorts for this article and should be out tomorrow. Thanks all for the read, appreciated.
I began to think about thir 3rd YR WR a lot recently and there have been many WR's who do not pan out like hoped - reggie brown, lol, but I think a lot of it depends on the system, WCO is difficult to learn for WR other offenses have a good system for a 3rd year receiver, but their QB blows. 3rd year WR's are not as more clear cut as some offenses allow for a receiver to blossom faster because so many are utilizing a spread formation, which like all other systems will be adapted to and change again. WCO, run and shoot, spread offense. Great read!
Holmes is a guy that will go earlier then some of the guys I listed but I agree with you that he should only get better this season.
