" Phillies left fielder Pat Burrell is a free agent and rival executives said Philadelphia is seriously considering a low-cost way to replace him: By moving third baseman/super pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs to the outfield. Dobbs hit .301 with nine homers in just 226 at-bats. He has played just 24 games in the outfield. But the rival executives said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel believes Dobbs can handle the outfield, especially remembering that he would be stepping in for the hardly fleet-footed Burrell, who is replaced late in games for defense by Eric Bruntlett. Burrell has power and little average.....so of course he'll go somewhere and get 30 mil guaranteed over 3 or 4 years.:icon_rolleyes:
He's as good as gone. He's been underappreciated by most fans here during his tenure (I'm guilty), but hopefully we can give his story a happy ending and send him off with a ring. As for the replacement, it's certainly not coming from inside the organization, at least not for next year. Dobbs is not the answer at all. His defense is very sub-par and there's a reason he hasn't played in the outfield in over a year. Not to mention he rarely faces lefties. Don't get me wrong, I love Dobbs. He's my favorite player on this team. However, he's best served to give us depth at third base and on the bench, not as an every day player. I expect management to go after a cheaper alternative in free agency.
Not really news...he's pretty much outta heeeerrrre. I'm thinking the Yankees could overpay for his services.
Honestly though, Burrell hasn't always produced until recently. Dobbs isn't going to be an everyday player and would be a perfect fit in the AL as a DH but I'll be selfish and keep him with us.
i really do not see burrell as underappreciated at all here. he has underachieved immensely throughout his tenure here. when he has come 1/2 way near to living up to his contract the fans have been behind him big time. his days are over here but i do hope he rises to the top and brings it home for us more than any other player on the team.
