The Detroit Lions have initiated trade scenarios with other NFL teams about trading the top overall selection they currently own, according to Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe. However, there hasnt been anyone inclined toward trading up at this point because of the high expense of signing a player at that slot. Baylor offensive tackle Jason Smith Smith and University of Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford are among the players the Lions are considering drafting No. 1.

eugene monroe is better than smith, that's why he says that. It really comes down to the salary that will force them to use the pick. even 10 years ago it would have been easier to trade the #1 pick than it is nowadays. The only way I see them taking smith is if they absolutely cannot sign stafford or monroe and for some reason smith is an easy signing.

Nobody wants that pick this year when there's no definitive number one...

that's what I'm saying for years now. Teams have to throw huge paychecks to unproven rookies - that's awful

    It's business.

    It's no different than gambling.

    Capitalism at it's best.

this is a win win situation for the Lions. If they do trade it then they can get some guy with vetran leadership and if they dont trade it they will get young lets to build on

No, that ain't business, that's big BS. Young, high drafted players demand contracts, some verterans don't have and even if they are a bust, the team have to pay them, since a lot of $$ are guaranteed. The NFL better take a look into this, instead spreading stupid fines all over the league. It's just a matter of time, till a firstrounder won't never be signed, bc of his demands.

Can't wait to watch that. A GM with enough balls to put back at their place a young guy and his greedy agent...
    GM of the year!

eh, every year the team with the #1 pick shops it but it never gets traded. the lions will probably pick #1 and they'll probably take a QB or OT.
