Leonard was used mostly as a fullback in St. Louis, but the Bengals are looking at him more as a third-down back. Im looking forward to that, Leonard said. I still have a lot of skills and can catch the ball out of the backfield. I had some idea that I might be traded. Theres a new coaching staff in so you dont know what they want or expect. I went through both minicamps but I guess they decided to go in another direction. Source: Cincinnati Enquirer
He catches the ball very well tho, and if he gets in the open field he can break a few tackles, god pickup for the bengals.
the point is the bengals need a better third down back, and trading for a fullback to catch screens and flares and expecting them to pick up 5-8 yards every time will not work.
Leonard is not a fullback, the Rams tried to put him there becuase they had a bunch of RB's. He is a HB and can run and catch and block, all the things a third down back needs to do in the NFL.
He's a tweener, and not in the good sense. He wasn't an NFL caliber runner and certainly not a blocker and in a way was overrated coming out of college because he's white. And once again, his name is added to a long list of recent high round blowouts in the draft for us.
