Chiefs Could Release QB Tyler Thigpen?

With Matt Cassel firmly entrenched as the Chiefs' starting quarterback, head coach Todd Haley recently suggested that the team might only keep two QBs going into the season. That could leave Tyler Thigpen, Brodie Croyle and newly acquired Matt Gutierrez in an intense struggle for one roster spot. Although Thigpen surprised with his solid play in 2008, Croyle has outperformed him thus far in training camp; Gutierrez, meanwhile, has a history with GM Scott Pioli.

I would be really surprised if Thigpen gets released, he played pretty well in real games last year, Guttierez has never started a game, and I dont buy that KC only keeps 2 QB's. I've heard more than 1 coach suggest this, and it rarely happens

Yeah, releasing Thigpen would be a shock and a head scratcher to me as well. He showed me last year that I would take him as my QB over Brodie Croyle as of right now.

Thigpen would be a more than decent back up in most teams. Hell, I'd take him over Kitna any day...

Haha, back to the Cassel thread I guess my source was better. Rumor has it Thigpen looks horrible in camp....I imaging he's pretty pissed off he wasn't given the job after last year. Must be affecting his performance or something.

I dont see Thigpen going anywhere. Must be a slow news day, trying to make something out of nothing.

They won't outright release him, they'd try to get something for him like a draft pick. If he doesn't fit the system then they'll move him for sure. Let's not forget the Chiefs had to heavily modify their offense in order for Tyler to be moderately successful. They played out of the shotgun almost exclusively. He was ok when everything was designed around him which isn't the way anyone would really want to design an offense.

Let's remember that's because our O line was (and might still be) atrocious.

He had to run for his life every play, why not give him a head start?

True, although when Albert was healthy the left side of the line was decent. Tyler Thigpen just isn't even an average NFL QB. His accuracy is poor and his arm strength isn't that great. We got many bigger things to worry about other than who's going to be the backup QB.

    I disagree about Tyler.

He just got thrown into the fire with no chance at learning an NFL offense.

I personally think he is franchise caliber.

I liked what I saw on Thigpen last year. He deserves a fair chance.

Thigpen could be our #4 that sounds good to me. Or 3 and leave McGee on the practice roster.

Chiefs or no Chiefs, carrying only 2 QB's is a recipe for disaster.

We'll agree to disagree then. He was a 7th round draft pick that wasn't even invited to the combine. He was put on waivers by Minnesota following his first training camp where we picked him up. It's not exactly like there were a ton of talented QB's he would have had to beat out in Minnesota. He was 1-11 as a starter last year...I just don't see the fascination with this guy. He looks to be a capable backup...that's it.

How is it Tylers fault that our D was one of the worst in NFL history?

How is it his fault that the O line can't block Pop Warner D linemen?

Thigpen is a great plaYer, he is the Greivis Vasquez of the nFL, scrappy, yet he gets the job done
