As expected, the Bears have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with linebacker Tim Shaw. It is conditional on him passing a physical. It's unknown if this will prevent the team from pursuing free agent Derrick Brooks any further. "Derrick's been a great player for a long time in the league," said coach Lovie Smith, who was Brooks' position coach in Tampa Bay. "He's a linebacker who's available. We're looking at all available players right now. Derrick would be a part of that. There's no more than that right now. Looking at everyone that's out there available." Source: Chicago Sun-Times
It's like Lovie said "it's who's available" we can just hope for the best like I was doing last night...:icon_rolleyes:
Sounds like the Bears want to see how the LB crew looks against Pittsburgh before making an offer to Brooks. Trying to cover a head wound with a tiny band aid IMO. Just freaking sign Brooks and be done with it.
The reason they went with Shaw over Brooks is simple. They feel Hunter Hillenmeyer and Nick Roach can cover it on defense and Shaw can contribute on special teams. Try getting Derrick Brooks on kick coverage.....good luck with that.
You beat me to the punch, Steve This was what I just wrote: "Remember, this the Bears. They only want a warm body for depth. As usual, they'll stand behind the guys already here as 'ready to step up'." :icon_rolleyes:
Plus you have to factor in that they get more bang for their buck with Shaw. He can backup and play special teams. Brooks won't come cheap because he is a vested NFL veteran. His minimum salary would be over $800,000 for one year.
Yep... Always the most for the least with the McCaskeys. It's still a shame they don't try to shore up a position than trying to find the players with multiple uses.
This is nothing new with them. The McCaskeys have been cheap for as long as I can remember. :icon_rolleyes:
