Panthers receiver Steve Smith took the blame for Jake Delhomme's costly interception against the Cowboys on Monday night. Frustrated by his inability to get open and navigate double-teams, Smith altered his route late in the fourth quarter. He stayed outside instead of running inside as Delhomme expected. The result was a Dallas interception that resulted in a 27-yard return for the game-clinching touchdown. "Jake was expecting me to cross his face," Smith said. "I should have crossed his face and I didn't cross his face. I put Jake in a bad situation. I second-guessed my route and I shouldn't have. The bottom line is that I screwed Jake."

It was pretty obvious. It was a gift to Newman after being juked by Smith. Cool move by Smith to take some of the heat, especially since he ran a different route.

As well he should take the blame. Gotta run the route you are assigned.

Didn't see the play yet, if that's what he did then good on him for taking the blame.

Good move if it was his idea & not after someone showed him the film.

That one, you could see it on Jake's face. Knew it was on Smith.

Either way he took the blame.

yep, it was obvious to anyone watching that it was smith's fault. i think it would interesting if the league changed the way it counts INT's. It's goobered that an INT like that one or one that happens by a receiver bobbling the ball and knocking it up in the air counts the same as a QB telegraphing a pass so the safety can step right in front of the receiver.

In baseball, the league officials make 'error' calls that are subjective. Why can't they do the same thing in the nfl to more accurately measure INT's? In fact, whenever it's blatantly the receiver's fault, why not keep a new stat of 'INT's Created' and attach them to the receiver?
