Kyle Orton is in the final year of a contract that is paying him a mere $995,000 this year. And sure, Orton would eventually like a long-term deal that would keep him the Broncos' quarterback until the end of his career. But Orton said the only time he thinks about his contract situation is when people ask him about it. "Those discussions are for the Broncos or for my agent," Orton said. "I'm not worried about that stuff." Denver coach Josh McDaniels has been preaching that despite the 6-0 start, nothing yet has been accomplished. Source: Denver Post
Kerry Collins is washed up and I'd much rather have Orton if I was Denver. Derek Anderson is signed through 2011 so Denver would have to trade for him. Guess it's possible, but why would they do it if Orton continues to win like he has?
I think andy82 is referring to abysmal results of those QBs after they signed long term high $ extensions, and not as options to bring in.
You think they are just going to let him go if he keeps up this pace? Really? No, they will shell out a nice hefty contract for him. Especially if he can manage a postseason win. I know it was waaay too early to tell, but they coulda get him for dirt cheap if they had signed him before the start of the season. Obviously they thought he had something or they wouldn't have asked for him in the Cutler trade.
They really didn't have a choice being they were thin at QB, and the price was right. I believe if Orton didn't work out this year, they would have moved up in the next draft the best they could to get a QB, being there are some good ones available. If Orton finishes the year well, they probably will sign him for fair contract.
Orton is tearing it up...no doubt. However, does Denver try to get him signed now or risk him leading them to a winning season and potentially the playoffs and having to pay him after that? People continue to knock Orton, but he's making all the right decisions and his teammates are believing in the kid. Call it the system or whatever you want, the kids not making mistakes and he's actually winning games for the team. No one thought the Broncos would be where they are now...not even Broncos fans...lol...
Kyle Orton has always been a decent QB. He rarely turns the ball over in the redzone, and until this year was a game manager. Hell, his rookie season did he not go 10-1 if I remember correctly? Kyle Orton is easily better than Kerry Collins and Derek Anderson, I half-jokingly said last year that Kerry's amnesia would wear off and he'd go back to Kerry Collins, look what happened. Only twice in his career has he finished with above 60% in completion percentage, and averages 12 TD to 11 INT a year (not bad, but not to be replaced by his 08 performance). He's average at best. Derek Anderson was a fluke. Orton is only 26 years old and is on track to finish the season with 24 TDs and 4 INTs. I think the guy deserves an extension
