In his first interview since he suffered his second concussion, Eagles' star running back Brian Westbrook said he was "really scared" about his future in football. Westbrook joined Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher on HBO's Joe Buck Live from New York University and talked about the two concussions that have sidelined him for four games already this season. "I'm worried about it," Westbrook said. "Concussions have been all over the headlines and all over the papers, and it has been on the top of my mind since the Redskins game on the 26th of October." Westbrook, 30, said his greatest fear is of the unknown ramifications that concussions can have as he grows older. "I'm very concerned just because there is not a lot of data that says in 10 years or 20 years you'll be fine if you had too many concussions," he said. "I'm worried about that, and hopefully next time I go out there I don't have to worry about it anymore. That's my biggest concern. How am I going to be when I'm 50 or when I'm 60? Will I have all these brain diseases and will I have a problem remembering things? . . . Now, I'm trying to get myself together with the help of the doctors as well as coach [Andy] Reid and the training staff. Now, the most important thing is to get 100 percent healthy - and not play football . . . until I'm 100 percent healthy." Source: Philadelphia Inquirer
Agreed. I do admire him for not being "tough guy" and ignoring the signs. The mentality is changing with the players, but I worry that if the mentality changes too much we are going to see further proliferation of "protection" rules that will leave it to where you can't even make a tackle without a penalty. 2050- NFL becomes touch football...
Well it's the Eagles fault for making him 60% of the offense from 2005-2008 We never gave Buckhalter, Tony Hunt, or Ryan Moats a chance to show they can be a solid 2nd option to split w/36. Now when he is 30 we got McCoy, sure he is going to be a special back but Westbrook could have a good 2 or 3 years left if we got a back to split w/him.........and USE HIM!
WTF? Dude, every running back in the NFL DREAMS of getting 60% of the offense. And he has been brittle his entire career. The concussions have nothing to do with how involved he was in the offense, just took some bad hits to the head. No, stick a fork in Westy. He'll be playing scared if he comes back, and I don't blame him. He made more than enough money to live off of for the rest of his life, so he should just be smart and move on to the next chapter.
