According to a Wall Street Journal study of four recent broadcasts, and similar estimates by researchers, the average amount of time the ball is in play on the field during an NFL game is about 11 minutes. In other words, if you tally up everything that happens between the time the ball is snapped and the play is whistled dead by the officials, there's barely enough time to prepare a hard-boiled egg. In fact, the average telecast devotes 56% more time to showing replays.

The lack of cheerleaders being shown is a serious problem that needs to be addressed.

I'm assuming that goes from the moment the center hikes the ball, so there is a lot more built up to each play as we watch them. Besides the NFL packs more high-speed hard-hitting action in each 3-4 seconds than a lot of sports do all game. Really we just need less commercials. They should cut out commercials until the game is 2:30 minutes long... seem like a fair balance.

lol, I bet a lot of married men would catch a lot more flack on Sunday's if the showed too much more cheerleader action.... but yea, more hotties is more better for most of us.

The thing they really need to cut out is after a td going advert, kickoff then advert again.
I don't mind the amount of adverts usually but it takes the piss when they do that.

Luckily here they go back to the studio a lot when you guys get adverts although usually id rather be watching the adverts..

With the late games though we don't get any adverts and better analysis which is pretty good.

I spent more time looking at the cheerleaders in your sig than the average game shows.

who didn't know this already? if the average play takes 5-8 seconds to complete and there are approximately 100 plays per game. that equals about 500-800 seconds of action, which is going to average about 11 minutes a game ...................... they had to do a 'study' to figure this out?

they probably got federal grant money to conduct this completely meaningless study ............

A study was done on this years ago and the time was 16 minutes. So we lost 5 minutes with the rule changes of late. Just my 2 sense.

:icon_cheesygrin: that's actually a great idea. run the play (which takes 6 or 7 seconds) and then immediately pan the camera to the cheerleaders ................

we would have 11 minutes of football, an hour of commercials, and 2 hours of cheerleaders :icon_cheesygrin:

    86WARD -

Wired did the same study and came up with 12 minutes and 8 seconds. In the four major sports, the actual "Live Action Per Game" was:

    NFL - 12:08
    NHL - 60:00
    NBA - 48:00
    MLB - 12:22

I'll take the 11 minutes or the 12:08 any time!
