Raiders coach Tom Cable has made it clear he wants quarterback Bruce Gradkowski back next season to compete with JaMarcus Russell for the starting job, and the next step is to assign a tender to the restricted free agent by Thursday's deadline. In lieu of a long-term deal, the Raiders intend to assign a second-round tender to Gradkowski. Cable told as much to Gradkowski's agent during a meeting at the NFL Combine. Can someone explain this to me? Is it just that someone would have to give us a second rounder for Bruce Almighty?
If someone else wanted to sign him we have the opportunity to match, if we decline to match then they have to give up a second in addition to signing him. I doubt anyone wants him that bad. There's also a value assigned to the tender, similar to a franchise tag where basically its a one year deal worth X amount of money. IIRC it's around a million.
