Defensive end Julius Peppers, the top agent on the market, has agreed to visit the Bears Friday, agent Carl Carey told the Tribune as free agency began Thursday night. No team was allowed to have contact with Peppers until the free-agent period officially began at 11:01 p.m., but Peppers had a strong interest in joining Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs, and Tommie Harris on the Bears' defense. The Bears were the first team to call Carey and extended a "substantial offer'' that was good enough to get Peppers on the plane.

I want to get excited about this but i'm not going to because the Bears and Julius Peppers still have to put pen to paper. I just hope the Bears don't screw this up.

Well he does want to play for a contender and the bears are not there yet since they need so much help on offense specially with the WR core they have. I just don't see how he will want to be in a team with an aging defense. Bears defense is not the powerhouse it used to be, and Lovie Smith should have been fired a long time ago... This is probably his attempt at keeping his job

Well, Lovie Smith did take a jet to Charlotte to pick up Peppers and his agent. Anything can happen.

That's a big sign of desperation for his job. Just look at what Childress did for Favre and after they signed Favre they gave Childress a contract extension. I'm sure L.Smith is looking for the same thing.

He knows this season will get him fired if he doesn't make a dent

I heard that on the radio earlier this morning. If Lovie's job wasn't on the line, I doubt this would have happened. Peppers seems interested in playing for the Bears. I just hope the Bears show him the money that doesn't let him leave Chicago without signing a contract.

yeah you're right about Lovie's desperation attempt, But i just think that you guys need more help on offense than on defense cause personally i think you guys don't have WR to save your lives, and I'm confused why you guys are shopping around Olsen when he is a security blanket for Cutler, you want to give him weapons not take them away.

Adding Peppers would instantly improve that defense. Its a system that dominates with constant pressure from the front 4 and they only have mediocre edge rushers right now. Adding Peppers would make Brown better and send Anderson back to sub packages where he thrived as a rook

I was watching comcast sportsnet earlier and Alex Brown said he is willing to move to left defensive end if Peppers signs with the Bears.

Thats odd because I believe Peppers is a LDE

He was matched up with Colombo every time we played them

    Can Peppers play either side?

Our defense was really bad last season too. I'd say both sides of the ball need upgrades pretty badly.

I'm not sure what to think about the Olsen trade rumors yet, some people say those rumors were started by his agent. We'll see soon enough I guess. But I think it is possible if they do trade Olsen that they intend to use that draft pick to try and turn around and trade for Brandon Marshall or Anquan Boldin. I do think we need to add a WR although I disagree with your assessment that we have nothing there. Devin Aromashadu shows a lot of promise. But he is still young and learning like most of our WR corps. It is too early to say none of those guys will produce but having a proven veteran in the mix would be nice.

Now we can add Chester Taylor and another WR but the OL would still be a question. I do think moving Chris Williams to LT will help a lot. Pace was done. Interior line still bothers me. Maybe by signing all these FA the Bears will be able to focus the draft on stocking up on OL?

I assume he can. He is a biggun for a DE, but he is more than athletic enough to rush from the blind side. I dont know if it was a matchup thing (cant be because Colombo always did well VS Peppers) but he alway's lined up on the strong side the last 4 times we played them

I think you make valid points after all the Cardinals are asking for a 2nd for Boldin which would make sense to go to the bears specially if someone will make the move for Olsen, unless they can do a straight up trade of Olsen for Boldin but I'm sure the Cards are looking at better offers. Brandon Marshall now that's a though one specially since im sure they want a 1st for him. And i guess i should clear up that you do have young undevelopped talent at WR but you dont have a #1WR and you guys tried to make Hester that player which was a huge mistake.

And if i sound a little negative towards the bears its not cause i hate them its cause they got dibs on Peppers first
