The Jets still like veteran running back Thomas Jones so much they took out a full-page ad in the main section of Sunday’s Kansas City Star to say thanks. The ad, on Page A11 of the paper, featured a huge picture of Jones in his Jets uniform carrying the football. The ad reads: “A person who embodies TOUGHNESS, DEDICATION and LEADERSHIP. Thanks TJ for three great seasons. Woody Johnson, Coach Rex Ryan, Mike Tannenbaum and the New York Jets.†It’s an unusual gesture, considering that the Jets didn’t match the two-year, $5 million offer Jones got from the Chiefs (he’ll make $3 million in 2010, as opposed to the $5.8 million he was due to make from the Jets) and promptly started pursuing LaDainian Tomlinson. “T. J. meant a lot to this team,†the team spokesman Bruce Speight said Sunday. “We have a tremendous amount of respect for him and the way he goes about his business. We wish him the best and wanted to express our appreciation.†Source: New York Times
I found a link to the full page ad. Classy. Seen it done many times. Jamie Sharper comes to mind after the Texans took the Raven in the expansion draft. Jamie took a full page add out in The Baltimore Sun to thank everyone from Art Modell to the fans. I think that is where Rex got the idea. Source: Kansas City Star
Going back to the old days of Cardinal futility this is funny as hell to me When with the Cardinals, Jones was thought to be too soft to be an effective HB in the NFL Pretty much the same was said about Garrison Hearst
Classy...but rather bizzarre imo. I think they would've gotten better production out of TJ versus LT. I still question the Jets commitment to winning after releasing a player like Jones...
I remember that. The old Cardinal days were pretty brutal. :icon_lol: Hearst in his final season in AZ fumbled a whopping 12 times. Both Hearst and Jones flourished when they arrived in San Francisco and N.Y. Jets respectively
they would have better served themselfs with paying the man and thanking him that way. but they loss is our gain. thanks Jets :icon_cheesygrin:
It's got to be an attempt by the Jets to make them feel better about themselves. Unless there was something going on behind the scenes that nobody's knows about, this entire episode is just downright strange in light of Tomlinson signing for $5.1MM + incentives for 2 years. I mean, WTF?????
It's simple.... They want Shonn Greene to start.... Thomas Jones was unlikely to be happy with being a backup..... LT allows them to do that.... They probably end up worse off in the short term.....question is, will they long term?
Seems like a classy thing to do IMO....why would the Jets need to do this to make themselves look better? I mean, it's not like 31 other teams aren't releasing players and signing others. I agree that TJ was probably a better option for them than LT, but who knows what they have planned.
The jets don't prefer Tomlinson over Jones...no way they're that stupid. Jones was due to make I think $5.8 million next year. The Jets didn't want to pay that with the emergence of Greene. If Jones would have agreed to take a pay cut to $3 million he'd still be a Jet.
