The Seattle Seahawks agreed to move down 20 spots in the second round and part with a 2011 third-rounder to acquire quarterback Charlie Whitehurst from San Diego. The price is a bargain if Whitehurst turns into a good starter for the Seahawks after signing what is expected to be a two-year deal worth about $5 Million annually. Assuming Matt Hasselbeck remains in place, this move could diminish the likelihood of the Seahawks drafting a quarterback in the first round. Source: ESPN
I can't help but wonder what lured the Seahawks to him so strongly, Obviously he was a former high thir rounder and he has some caliber in that sense, but I don't think he's ever taken a snap in the regular/post season before, and trading down one pick and giving another just seems a little expensive for someone who hasn't played regularily in five years.
I am happy with this. I loved him coming out of Clemson for a West-Coast style offense. Don't know why the Chargers took him in their vertical scheme. Value pick, I guess. But the 2nd round trade down was a bit weird....maybe we are targeting someone in the late 2nd? Alex Gibbs might have his eye on a linemen down there....
They had to make the deal better than what the Cardinals 3rd round pick, otherwise the Chargers would have just refused dealing him to the Seahawks. Really the swap of 2nds would of been enough value wise (about mid 3rd), the extra 3rd was icing on the cake. I'm surprised that Whitehurst was value more than guys like Quinn, Seneca, Boldin, Cromartie etc. If you asked most Charger fans what they thought we'd get for Whitehurst, most would have thought a late round pick. They'd be thrilled with any 3rd let alone what we got from Seattle. So I'm pretty happy, opens up the possibility to not draft a RB in round 1 and potentially fill holes at RB and NT. Hopefully he works out for the Seahawks (unless it's against the Chargers).
What a stupid trade. Wtf were the seahawks thinking? Going down 20 spots in the 2nd round and as if thats not enough they deal a probable early 3rd round pick from next years draft. Whitehurst is so great he couldn't even beat out Volek on the depth chart.
