Pro Football Talk is hearing that teams may try to move up into the 10 in the 2010 NFL Draft to select Clemson running back C.J. Spiller. PFT also writes that rumors are currently eyeing on the Miami Dolphins and the New York Giants as strong candidates to move up and take Spiller. The Dolphins currently own the No. 12th overall pick and the Giants own the No. 15th overall pick. Source: Pro Football Talk
I'm going to be honest here, I absolutely love C.J. Spiller. He is a dynamic player that is a threat to take the distance every time he touches the football. He could carry the ball at least 10-12 times a game in our offense and keep Jacobs and Bradshaw fresh for the second half to close out games. He would also give Eli another weapon in the passing game and would also upgrade our special teams unit along with Hixon to give us better starting field position. Chris Johnson of the Titans is probably the key reason of Spiller's rise. Both are almost identical in terms of frame and overall skill sets. There were questions of Johnson's ability as well whether he could be a full time back in the NFL but he put those worries to rest in his first two years in the NFL and became just the second running back in NFL history to rush for over 2,000 yards in his second season, joining Eric twinkyerson. But I don't believe thats going to happen. Spiller would be more of a luxury pick and I don't believe Jerry Reese is going to move into the Top 10 to take a luxury player instead of a need pick. Even though Gerris Wilkinson is moving into the Middle Linebacker mix along with Bryan Kehl, Chase Blackburn and Jonathan Goff, none of those guys haven't proven that they have the teams full confidence that they can be long-term options at that spot to bypass the likes of Rolando McClain and Sean Weatherspoon should they be available at #15 overall.
Not to sure about the Dolphins.. but the Giants makes TOTAL sense! Looking at the Giants (As a whole) man - you just can't find a hole or Gap on both sides of the ball. Alot of people are mocking Rolando McClain and Sean Weatherspoon to New York but that wouldn't make sense you know? You have Kirk Morrison & Thomas Howard for the taking.. If the Giants are serious about winning another SuperBowl then they should seriously consider picking up one of the two (if not both) As I recall, Brandon Jacobs made coment about "Having a breakout year" so maybe he knows something that we don't. * wink wink *
With the Dolphins having Ronnie Brown, Ricky Williams, Patrick Cobbs and Lex Hilliard....it's just not a need. The Fins have so many holes right now in key positions (Safety, Defensive Tackle, Wide Receiver, Outside LB) that it doesn't make sense to pick a RB. Now, it makes sense that the rumors are starting to roll which could prompt another team trading up into the 12th spot to have a shot at Spiller. But, as far as the Fins taking a luxury pick like this, it doesn't make sense.
I'm just going to say... if the Giants did it, I could make sense of and would support it, but it's not my first choice.
