Aside from the fact that the Redskins already have three of the top running backs from 2006 -- plus favorable reports from the first two minicamps about Clinton Portis, Larry Johnson and Willie Parker -- the Wednesday meeting between Bruce Allen and Westbrook, the former Eagles' running back, sure looks like there's a heavy dose on convenience involved. Well before news surfaced today that Westbrook would be meeting with the Redskins, the two were scheduled to share the stage at Springarn High on Wednesday, speaking to 175 area high school football players as part of the NFL High School Player Development program. It's easy to envision a scenario in which the Redskins are asked to chat with Westbrook, who hasn't drummed up much interest thus far in free agency. Time will tell, but given the circumstances, the fact that the Redskins are meeting with Westbrook isn't shocking. Signing him would be. Source: Washington Post
That would be an insult to this once top running back. Stuff him in a backfield with talents like Portis, Johnson, and Parker, and Westbrook is just another name in the shuffle. I could see him going to a team that is one piece away from true Super Bowl contention; the Packers would be a great fit, him and Grant in the same backfield would cause nightmares for opposing defenses.
Shanahan always carries as many running backs as the Ravens carry linebackers. Just a different philosophy.
