San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman can very close to being traded to the New Orleans Saints on draft day. Discussions with the Saints and two other teams got past the preliminary stages during last month’s draft. Talks dissolved because terms could not be reached on a long-term deal and the Chargers were firm in their desire for a first-round pick in return. The Chargers have made it known that Merriman remains available for trade and likely will through the October trade deadline. Source: Kevin Acee, San Diego Union Tribune
If the Saints have ONE pressing need going into the offseason that would bar them from repeating as champs, it's the linebacking corps. Real shame they couldn't pull this off, they'd be unstoppable.
