Armando Galarraga of the Detroit Tigers lost his bid for a perfect game Wednesday night with two outs in the ninth inning on a call that first base umpire Jim Joyce later admitted he blew.

First baseman Miguel Cabrera cleanly fielded Jason Donald 's grounder to his right and made an accurate throw to Galarraga covering the bag. The ball was there in time, and all of Comerica Park was ready to celebrate the 3-0 win over Cleveland, until Joyce emphatically signaled safe; the veteran ump regretted it.

" I just cost that kid a perfect game,'' Joyce said. " I thought he beat the throw. I was convinced he beat the throw, until I saw the replay."

" It was the biggest call of my career," said Joyce, who became a full-time major league umpire in 1989.

He needs to be suspended. The officiating in MLB this year has been atrocious. Bud, take your head out of the umpires union's butt long enough to make some changes.

Would have been the 3rd perfect game this season, eh?

Never been more than 1 in a season (modern era and all that, God I hate baseball...)...

Rare. First 2 in a season since 1980. But.......

Is 1980 when the modern era began?

    Or was I wrong?

He hecked that call up big time...at the same time he immediately took responsibility for it which, I respect. The first person he went to was Galarraga to admit his mistake and apologize. Just the fact that he accidentally screwed this kid out of a perfect game is punishment enough.

I agree Ward. ESPN played an interview of him after the game and he will beat himself up over this for a long time. You have to respect him for owning up to the mistake almost immediately.

Galarraga also handled the situation with class as well.

So just because he said he's sorry he shouldn't be reprimanded? Bullcrap, he changed baseball history, suspension at the very least.

just change the call and put one of these -> * next to it.

problem solved and then the world can move along.

I never said there shouldn't be any punishment maybe someone else did though. The punishment should follow what they normally do in situations where blown calls happen.

If nothing else maybe more replay for MLB. There was another questionable call in the Mariners game that led to a victory.

What's a punishment going to do? Set a precedent for the future? Basically the bottom line is it was a blown call...it just happened to occur on the last out of a perfect game. If he's suspended then every umpire should be suspended for every bad call? That would leave no Major League Umpires for extended periods of time...especially recently. Whatever the punishment is for a blown call, that's what it should be...which is probably nothing.

I would've liked to see Selig overturn the call, which he refused to do, but if he does that, then that opens a whole crapload can of worms...it blows all around for everyone...

Ward, Joyce's ineptitude changed baseball history. I feel for him, but something has to be done. There has to be some accountability, just like any other job. You heck up that big you get reprimanded.

I agree with you 100%, but that kind of crap happens all the time...it's just unfortunate that this time it hecked up history and Selig doesn't want to overturn the call...I'm not sure how those umpires get reprimanded, if that even occurs, but it can't be dealt with any different than any other blown call.
