With the potential lockout looming and threatening to make 2011 a year that NFL fans come to hate it's good to see that NFL fans and businesses aren't taking it lightly. There's a new force in town and it goes by the name of Dontmesswithsuccess (Don't Mess With Success). It is collecting and publishing facts that make a strong case as to why the lockout shouldn't happen. Literally thousands of NFL fans, businesses and communities are rallying around this new site to help stop or at the very least negotiate the upcoming lockout. The sports media's increased attention seems to give more attention to the NFL owners and not enough to the little people, the NFL fans who would ultimately be the ones that would be hit hard by the lockout. The media needs to jump on the Dontmesswithsuccess.com bandwagon now as it's building steam, they need to report on just what is at stake, the NFL fan losing football, just imagine no NFL football on Sundays, no Monday Night Football, no Super Bowl, millions upon millions of lost dollars, of course the owners will get paid billions from the TV contracts even if no football is played in 2011. We as fans need to band together to make sure that our favorite sport succeeds and grows in spite of the greed of the NFL team owners. Again, feel free to check out www.dontmesswithsuccess.com for facts on what the lockout entails and how we can help in stopping it for the sake of NFL fans everywhere. I joined and added my $.02, don't be the silent majority any longer.
Agreed 100%. Both sides have to realize that nobody wants a lockout and have to swallow their pride and come to an agreement. This isn't fair to anyone.
Great cause but the sad reality is that NFL players don't care a whole lot about this. They want their money and will sit out a year if they need to to get that point across. Will Sundays suck without football? Yep, it surely will. But will players honestly care how I, the NFL care? Probably not. They want their GIANT ridiculous contracts. In 94 when the MLB strike happened the ownership made a collective genius call, they brought in replacement players. There was a movie about it which poses the question, what if we did bring in replacement players? With the birth of the UFL and the other league there's no shortage of people who wouldn't love to throw on an NFL uniform. Would it suck for the fans to watch 3rd and 4th rate guys going out there and playing? No Adrian Peterson, No Donovan McNabb, No Peyton Manning. Yep, that sucks a lot but hey, bring these other guys in and show the players that they're not going to let the players dictate the salary cap. This is one of the few times that I'm on ownerships side. 250,000 is more than enough to play a game. If there's no football will it suck, yes. Will it suck enough for me to take up my time to sign a petition, not a chance. With all the other things that are wrong out in the world, who cares if Peyton is making 250k a year or 25 million. Let them all strike, there's hundreds of people who'd willingly suit up for a "league minimum" to play a game.
Are you serious? Really serious??? If the lockout happens the OWNERS will actually still get paid, none of the TV rights monies will go to the players. Does the players packages need tweaking, of course, like the rookies monies but a lockout does no one any good except the owners. The owners' threat of lockout is very real. The owners opted out of their contract early and have already taken the unprecedented step of doing away with the salary cap for 2010. They have also hired the same lawyer the NHL used to orchestrate their lockout in 2004. You say $250,000 is enough for a player but you are ok with owners making millions and millions? Of 24 professional sports franchises that are worth more than $1billion, 19 are NFL teams The world?s most valuable pro sports teams - Other sports- nbcsports.msnbc.com
I'll spread the word. Lockout would be flat out horrible, thank god college football would still be here.
True, but a big reason owners opted out was because of players wanting large, large salaries. yes, Owners will get paid no matter what but it's because players *coughdarellreviscough* threaten hold outs because they want more money. Just take what you have and play. Inflating salaries are a big reason why owners don't care. They're all about sitting back and collecting their TV checks but if there's an extended lock out I'm sure TV companies are going to look at recouping their money because it's not their fault lockouts happen. In todays society where no major network is dumb enough to not have escape clauses in their contracts for just this scenario, it'll hurt owners more than players. If there is a lockout, it better not be a very long one. Owners are set to sit this one out for a while, but if it looks like its going to go more than a season, they need to get replacement players out there. Last year we saw a rookie, who never saw an NFL snap say that he would sit out an entire year because he didn't get paid enough. That's goobered. Just take what you get because it's more than you deserve. That's my point.
As I said Rookie salaries need to be looked at but this lockout hurts everyone, and I MEAN EVERYONE, except the owners who stand to still make millions and millions maybe even billions while no one plays football. I just put up an article that the NFLPA is going after the NFL because of those TV rights, regardless, I can not agree that a lockout is good for anyone but thank you for your opinion Duke.
I do agree though. A lockout wouldn't help anyone. They need to take a cue from baseball. In 94 when the strike happened baseball was at the height of it's popularity. Attendance numbers were huge, the price of going to a game wasn't ridiculous, it truly was America's national past time. After the strike ended, even after replacement players MLB was essentially the NHL. It's taken them forever to regain some popularity and in there absence a lot more American's turned to football who since, has been the mainstay in the US. So if this NFL lockout happens, I do agree that no one wins, but I've seen this coming for a long time with the inflated salaries and demands of players. Does it suck the owners will make MAD loot even if there is a lockout? Yes, it does. Does it suck that players these days have turned into money grubbing douche bags, yes it does. But it's been coming for a while. 6 mil is plenty in a year. Why hold out to make 12? That's my point. Players are too far in control as far as money goes and this might knock that down a little bit. In the 90's you could go to an NFL game for like 40 bucks. I got tickets to an Eagles game last season and the cheapest, for tickets 19 rows from the top it was like 80 dollars. I just think that the NFLPA needs to shut the heck up. Look into the TV deals or whatnot, sure. But as for having a lockout. Just sign the CBA and play football.
The owners are charging the high prices regardless of what they pay the players. The owners are making crazy money and still they raise prices, we spend money yearly for the right to see any game we want by purchasing Directv, yet if the lockout happens the owners make money but the players do not, how is that fair? I don't have the answers but I feel that as long as a company is making billions they should be sharing the billions with the people who put them in that situation, the players bring in the billions the players should be paid accordingly whether or not I think a million or 12 million is too much it's all relevant.
Yes, let's not blame the players for holding out. It's the owners fault, 100% A freaking KICKER in Cleveland is holding out because he wants more money but it's the owners fault. The owners earn the right to make mad money and keep it. Does it suck that they raise ticket prices and we have to pay, again, yes. But does it suck more that they do that because the idiot kicker holds out for more money, YES! That's my point. Not that owners are amazing and players suck. They both suck, they're both douchebags but the players are the ones making this crap happen. Just accept your freaking contract, play it out and then restructure it. Don't NOT show up to play a GAME because you want 13million when you make 4 million. If you're dumb enough to sign a small contract, that's your own damn fault. And the thing that sucks is the lockout won't do ANYTHING. The NFLPA and owners will sign a new CBA and in 3 years we'll be having this same conversation again so it doesn't matter. Greed runs rampant in the NFL, actually, in professional sports as a whole. So I say heck them both. And if you want to bring in the whole "the company makes money so the players should," you need to take another look at the problem. Companies make MILLIONS a year and don't pay their employees anymore. The NFL isn't any different. As it is, the NCAA is a HUGE corporation and makes millions and their players don't see a cent off of that. So because the NFL as a corporation makes a ton of money doesn't mean that the players should see more of that.
Bringing the NCAA in is a tad overkill Duke, college players don't get paid they are not professional players. And yes, I think the more money a company makes because of the direct influence of their workers then the workers/players should be paid accordingly. Sure the salaries are overblown but the monies that the NFL is making has been doubled, tripled and even quadrupled over time. Saying if someone signs a small contract they are dumb is ludicrous, Chris Johnson of the Titans is looking for more money and why the hell not, because his contract isn't up??? He also did his job and went over and beyond, the Titans should pay him not just because he played but because he overplayed just as someone would be paid a salary then sold over and beyond what was expected and got a bonus.
I would love to live in this fantasy world that you live in where you get paid in every job due to your performance. Performance bonuses in the real world aren't these GIANT numbers. In the NFL if you "outplay" your salary, too freaking bad. Revis made 6.2 million last year. SUCK IT UP AND PLAY OUT YOUR CONTRACT MAKING 6 FREAKING MILLION DOLLARS! When you become a FA, go get that 12 million dollar a year contract. Screw, I still think that players should make a base salary and just get more money bases on incentives. This way when Albert Haynesworth SUCKS after signing a GIANT deal, you aren't stuck with it. Sign them to like a million dollars a year and for everything you do, get a little more. 500k for each pick, 500k for a TD, etc. I still think that players should just play out their contract and suck it up. Maybe saying that they're dumb enough to sign a small contract was a bit of a stupid remark. But honestly, especially in this economy, just play your contract. They're already making MAD LOOT when they could easily be stocking shelves at Wal Mart or even teaching in a classroom making 40k a year. Just be happy with what you have. Don't give the owners a reason to be giant douchebags, just shut up and play.
comeon Duke, you can't simply say be happy because you could be working at Wal-Mart, the public made this situation that much is true. To simply say play to your contract is like saying if I pay you to answer the phone for 10 bucks an hour then just answer the phone, don't do anything else that could make you more valuable to the company, don't do more than you are capable of doing because you will still make only 10 bucks no matter what. I do live in the real world and it sucks, and I didn't say you get paid in every job due to your performance. Of course performance bonuses aren't those type of numbers, only because I don't make millions to being with, CEO's of companies get paid millions because the company made millions. Be happy with what you have and don't aspire to make more or deserve more? It's all about the benjamins Duke, I don't know anyone that would turn down more money because they already have enough, it's in our DNA I think to never settle..lol As I said
I remember two strikes from the 80's. It really sucked big time. I can see both sides reasons for this. The owners shelled out big bucks for the team and the players are risking injury. Rookie salary cap should be first and formost on the agenda to help curb the costs. Make the players earn the big contract. Another thing that bugs me is that after one good or at least decent year players want the big bucks. Guarenteed contracts would help in that regard. "They can cut a player at anytime so why not hold out for a new contract?" Guarentee a max of 3 years. Not just the signing bonus but the whole contract.
