The 2010 conclusion of the annual Brett Favre retirement drama did not sit well with Hall of Famer Rod Woodson. The NFL Network analyst said this week that Favre's drawn-out should-I-play-or-not scenario have become grating and said he had lost respect for the Minnesota Vikings QB. He said on the NFL Network: "This five-year saga, I think, is played out. I think a lot of veterans in the National Football League, even though I've been retired for seven years, are really tired of this." Favre said on Wednesday after his first practice with the Vikings that he did not think he or anyone else deserves the attention given to his playing status. Woodson said that Favre risks tarnishing his legacy by lingering, even after the 40-year-old posted one of his finest seasons last year: "He had a tremendous year last year. There's no doubt that Brett Favre is a Hall of Fame quarterback. But I've lost respect for Brett in what he's done the last five years, and I've lost some respect to where an organization has to go to win a Super Bowl … and thinking that this is the only way to do it. So, here we go again. It's win a Super Bowl (or bust) for the Vikings." Source: USA Today
Silly to lay this drama all at Favre's feet. Sure, he's a Prima Donna but it's the media's insatiable need for 'the scoop' that drives this soap opera. Woodson should know better...
Usually Super Bowl or Bust for every team, but in the Vikings case, it's REALLY Super Bowl or bust. If they don't win it with Favre, they move on with Tavaris Jackson in 2011...they should hope for a lock out...
His holdout went to the end of October, I think in '87? It was during a players strike as well...longest holdout in Steelers history. It doesn't really have any correlation to Favre's situation. Woodson wasn't wishy washy about playing and Favre wasn't holding out for more money.
Considering the Vikings are by far the most successful team to have never won a Super Bowl, I think most fans are more than okay with a Super Bowl or bust mentality.
What about the Eagles? They're pretty damn successful and have never won one. If R-O-D [space] W-O-O-D-S-O-N doesn't spell Brett Favre, then you'd be right. Favre cares about himself and allegedly his family first and foremost and probably in that order... Rightfully so...it's a jungle out there, gotta look out for number one...but don't step in number two.
The Eagles are number 2, but the Vikes have the 3rd most playoff appearances of any team, trailing only the Cow Boys and Giants. 4 Superbowl losses followed by 5 NFC Championship losses. I would say they are the most successful team to never go all the way, what a great consolation prize, right?
eh, sure this annual ritual has taken away some of the respect level for Favre but he's not really the one to blame. He's being very upfront with the teams in saying he won't know if he's playing or not until very close to the season. The TEAMS are allowing him to do it, so, if anything, I have less respect for the teams allowing players to show up when they want, decide if they're playing or not, etc.
