Coach Mike Singletary thought he had a good one when the 49ers picked Reggie Smith in the third round out of Oklahoma in 2008. Things didn't click right away when Smith was asked to move from cornerback to safety, but it seems that Smith could be on the verge of breaking out. His 91-yard interception return against Indianapolis for a touchdown last week was just the latest sign that Smith is maturing, as was his knocking down of a goal-line pbutt. It was an encouraging performance for a player who was limited by injuries last year and who was on the inactive list for six weeks thanks to a groin problem. "I see a more confident player,'' Singletary told the San Jose Mercury News. "I see a player that really is beginning to understand what we're trying to do on the backend, all of the little detailed things. The word 'detail' comes up a lot and that's the thing that we're stressing. We have to know what exactly we're doing; we have to know exactly what the calls are, exactly who we're working with. We can't be guessing.''
